Sycamore was a small, agricultural town in Cook County, Illinois. It is located east of Chicago on the north side of the Chicago River. The population was 1,674 at the 2000 census. The first Europeans to visit Sycamore were French traders in 1763. In 1814, General James K. Polk arrived in what is now Sycamore and founded the city in honor of his friend and superior officer Samuel J. Banks, who had died while fighting in Mexico. The city was named for Polk's hometown of Savannah, Georgia (now Savannah, Georgia). In 1872, when much of Cook County was organized into municipalities and Sycamore became part of Bridgeport Township, it remained an agricultural community with a few hundred residents until it became home to many people working in downtown Chicago during the 1920s and 1930s as part of the Great Migration from rural America to urban areas throughout North America. During World War II (1939-1945), many workers from Illinois made their way to munitions plants in overseas locations such as Ontario and Middlesex Counties, Massachusetts; Placentia California; Brunswick Maine; Beech Grove Minnesota; and Hammond Louisiana. Many Sycamore residents also served in military units during that time including Ulysses S. Grant's army brigades which fought atplains near Corinth Mississippi; General Dwight D Eisenhower's army corps that played a role at Normandy beaches; plus more than 2 dozen local fire companies serving along with state police departments providing support throughout North America during that chaotic period known as "the war years".
