The Sycamore, Illinois town was founded in 1812 by Jonathan and Rebecca Jennings. The Jennings named their town after a sycamore tree that they saw on their farm. The first permanent settlers in the town were John Fenton and his family, who bought land from theJennings in 1826. In 1829, John Fenton married Sarah Willard, who had come to America from England. She was the daughter of General Samuel Willard, one of the founders of Chicago. The couple moved to Sycamore and started a small grocery store. They also raised chickens and grew crops. In 1831, they built a house on what is now State Street inSycamore. The house still stands and is used as a hotel today. Between 1830 and 1840, there were other families living inSycamore: the Henschs, Smiths, Rankins, Pottersons,and Groomsmanes. By 1860, there were only four people living in Sycamore: Fenton himself; his wife Sarah; two children of John Fenton's second wife Alice; and an elderly man named James Chamberlain lived alone on Cemetery Hill (now University Avenue). However, during the American Civil War (1861-65), Sycamore was very active in supporting the Union cause. After being sacked by Confederate forces at Fort Dearborn on July 8th 1862,the town quickly rebuilt with local volunteers under General Lucius Wigfall commanding most of its military activity throughout 1863-64 including several successful raids against Confederate supply lines near Joliette Prairie In 1865-1866 new residents arrived when Isaac Newton arrived from France with his family following the war’s termination. New homes were erected for these newcomers on Church Street between Race Street and State Streets within weeks of their arrival Newton raised cattle until he decided to move to Illinois permanently around this time This period of stability ended when young Nathaniel Hawthorne , son of Emerson Hawthornewho had came over with his father while Emerson was serving out his three year sentence at Sing Sing prison began life at Newton’s home before moving into boarding school later that year Hawthorne would become one of America’s leading authors during this time
The town of Sycamore, Illinois was founded in 1837 by John McNamara. It became a city in 1888. In 1927, the Chicago and North Western Railway built a line from Joliet to Sycamore. The railway merged with the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad in 1970.
