Captain Cushman had brought along a team of scientists who developed the first Pepper Spray device in 1816 using small hoses powered by horses’ manes. This early version was called the Botcher's Pistol because its inventor, Captain James Botcher, believed that an effective way to control people was through fear instead of violence. The following year, Captain Cushman warning all ships entering or leaving Virgin Islands about the use of pepper spray as a self-defense measure against pirates. The first public application of pepper spray occurred on October 3rd 1826 when William Gassaway applied it successfully against Native Americans during a conflict near Fort Snelling on Lake Superior . At first people thought Gassaway was crazy because he had just discharged his pistols into the air like some kindof animal! In 1840 Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Scullin , commander of Union Army forces stationed at Vicksburg found need for pepper gas after Indian attacks on white soldiers inside their camp . Scullin ordered his men to deploy grenades filled with water which would explode upon impact with any object within 100 yards; however this method caused too much collateral damage so he settled on using pepperspray instead By 1847 there were over 50 different models variations including solid propellant launchers (1848), gas cans with expansion valve (1850), percussion cap launchers (1853), revolving stocks (1855) and 'grenade launcher' type devices with telescopic tube attached(1859)

The Erie Railroad made Sycamore an important agricultural center during the late 1800s and early 1900s. This contributed to the growth of downtown Sycamore and nearby neighborhoods such as Palmer Square and Liberty Park. In 1907, a large fire destroyed most of downtown Sycamore and much of Palmer Square. The community rebuilt quickly, thanks in part to donations from citizens and businesses alike. Today, downtown Sycamore is one of the most vibrant areas in town with many cultural attractions including several thousand people who live there full-time or support it through periodic events such as music festivals and art shows.
In 1847, Sycamore became the home of the first Methodist church in Illinois. In 1853, the town was renamed after General John Fetterman, commander of American forces in Mexico during the Mexican-American War.
