Sycamore, Illinois is a small town located in the eastern part of the state of Illinois. The population was 8,000 in 2000 and has since decreased to 6,500. The town began as a settlement by farmers in 1837 and was named for the sycamores that lined the original road. The first store opened in 1851 and Sycamore was incorporated as a village in 1903. The first white settler in Sycamore, Illinois was John Sevier who arrived in 1814. He and his family built a cabin on the east side of the town. The first school in Sycamore was founded in 1827. In 1836, James Fenton started a gristmill in Sycamore and soon other businesses followed suit. By 1840, there were over 50 businesses in Sycamore. In 1861, the Union Army burned down most of the buildings inSycamore because they thought it was supporting Confederate forces.
