In 1876, Sycamore was the site of a gunfight between two groups of men. The fight occurred when a band of gunmen raiding a farm in the town looted and killed several people. One man, Johnnie Johnson, decided to take revenge by shooting at the bandits as they fled. He shot three of them before being fatally wounded himself. This event is often credited as the beginning of the Gun War in Illinois.

Sycamore, Illinois is a town located in McLean County, Illinois. The population was 5,873 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Sycamore was James Richardson in 1814. He and his family traveled from Kentucky to start a new life in what would be their final resting place. At that time, the area around Sycamore was only a small strip of land between Springfield and Chicago. By 1830, Richardson's grandson had moved to the area and started farming with his brother-in-law David Cooks. In 1834, John Cooks purchased the farm from David for $2 per acre. The farms became known as Cooks Road after John's son-in-law James Cook bought it from him in 1853. The town of Sycamore was platted on May 3, 1855 by General George Crook with deeds given to Ephraim Gooding and Solomon Mapes; both men were natives of Philadelphia who had come west during the American Civil War to help raise money for the war effort. On December 12, 1860–the date local historian Harry Aiken puts forth as being “the birthdate of our present town”—the first post office was established at Sycamore when Andrew Morrill received mail there from Batavia Township (now Aurora) south of Joliet Lake on November 22nd (dated January 2nd). On May 14th 1870 another post office called “Plymouth” opened at which time mail arrived weekly from Joliet Junction (now Peoria) downriver via boatload directly to Plymouth thence by stagecoach across country until July 1st when steamboats took over this service bringing letters directly into Plymouth where they were sorted and delivered by hand or messenger to subscribers residing within Plymouth limits’; also included were packages sent upriver on schooners freighted with goods assorted among other items In 1875 a schoolhouse/church building erected just north of present day First Church Avenue served grades K through 8th grade until 1918 when it was replaced by an all brick high school building built about 1915 which still stands today inside its original footprint In 1907 Butterfield & Company began selling tickets for baseball games played at Parkdale Grounds near downtown which remain popular today In 1916 two companies merged forming Fenton Coal & Coke Company represented by J P Morgan proxy #1 effective September 15 On October 28th 1916 sycamore native Abraham Lincoln died while serving out his third term as Governor of Illinois Alden Shapleigh founded Riddle Shoes company located southeast corner O'Hare Blvd./Highway 61 east side later becoming Apple store now under name Apple Store Inc
The Sycamore family settled in the area around what is now Sycamore, Illinois in 1812. The first mention of the township was made on a map from 1790. The township was established on February 14, 1818. At first, the Township was known as "Smyrna".
