There is a long and tangled history of gun slings in Sycamore, Illinois. From the early days of firearms to the modern era, there have been references to "gun slings" in the community. The first reference to any type of sling was found in a deed from 1793. It reads: "And it be agreed that Eliaphe [sic] will make and deliver unto said John Bemis one hundred and thirty weight of shot, with a sling, for his Musket." In 1827, an ordinance was passed by the town council stating: "That all arms and ammunition necessary for military purposes shall be kept at the storehouse." A year later, another ordinance was passed stating: " That every man who resides in this town should keep himself armed with pistols or shotguns." In 1845, James Prentice patented a rifle sling that allowed shooters to hold their rifles horizontally instead of vertically. This modification became known as the PrenticeSling. By 1850, gunners had started using these rigs at ranges throughout the community. The development of firearm safety led to increased awareness about gun slings. Gunslings were made specifically for use with firearms and soon became popular among users. By 1870, there were references to "gunslinging parties" being held in various locales throughout America. These gatherings featured competitive shooting bouts featuring teams of gunmen from different regions of America vying for glory and prizes money and weapons related items such as gunsights, saddles, dogsleds (for running), tents etc.. One such event occurred in Sycamore on November 30th,. 1870 under the auspices of the American Rifleman magazine entitled The great rifle race between Chicago & Springfield (Illinois). Over sixty gunmen took part including manySycamore residents who would go on to become famous international names in competition Shooting disciplines like trap shooting (1871), skeet shooting (1875), duck hunting (1877) etc... It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is bordered by Rockford to the north, Joliet to the east, Peoria to the south and west, and Will County to the northwest. The town was founded in 1838 on land donated by James Fenton. In 1851 it became a village. In 1898 it became a town; and in 1925 it became an incorporated city. The most famous resident of Sycamore was Abraham Lincoln, who was born there in1809 and lived there until his death in 1865. Other notable residents include Joseph Pulitzer (the founder of Pulitzer Prize fame), Julius Erving (a Hall-of-Famer basketball player), Rosemary Clooney (the actress who played Mrs. Robinson on "The Magnificent Seven"), Irvin Kershner (the director of "Eisenhower") and Robert Frost (the author of "To Kill a Mockingbird").

Sycamore was a small village in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 234 at the 2000 census. It is now a ghost town. The village was established in 1857 as part of the new county seat of McLean County, and grew rapidly due to its location on the Illinois Central Railroad. In 1870, it had a population of 514; by 1900 it had dropped to 234. Its only source of income came from agriculture. By 1960, the last residents had left and all that remained were foundations and memories of the village's days past. Sycamore experienced one significant change during its short life: in 1868 it became home to General Order No. 6 which called for all men over 21 to be enrolled in the army or navy if they could not find employment elsewhere due to war-time mobilization efforts in Illinois and other states. As many as 100 Sycamore males enlisted in what would be their final resting place until World War II ended over 130 years later when most were discharged from military service or died before they could reach retirement age.
The first post office in Sycamore, Illinois was established on Dec. 12, 1851. The present Sycamore post office building was built in 1907.
