Sycamore, Illinois (/sɛkˈmærəoʊ/), officially the City of Sycamore, is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 10,752 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Cook County and the largest city in the Chicago metropolitan area. In 1847, John P. Morgan donated land for what would become Sycamore Township. On July 1, 1853, Sycamore became an unincorporated community when it was granted its own post office. The name originated from a sycamore tree that Morgan had seen on his farmhouse property. The economy of Sycamore is diversified with numerous small businesses operating within their specific fields such as accounting, real estate agentships and food service restaurants; however some of the more well-known businesses include Ford Motor Company's Dearborn Plantation Factory (now part of Ford Motor Company Americas) and Northwestern Mutual Insurance company's Joliet Plantation House (now part of Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance). According to Forbes magazine in 2009,[1]Sycamore had one of the highest median incomes in Cook County[2] and ranks 9th out of 20 cities studied by Forbes’ “Best Places To Live” list.[3]

The town of Sycamore, Illinois was erected on the site of a small Indian village in 1837. The first settler in what is now Sycamore was Isaac Dunham. A post office and school were both established in 1839, and by 1840, Sycamore had a population of about fifty people. In 1842, the town became the county seat for Decatur County. By 1860, Sycamore had a population of three hundred residents. In 1861, Abraham Lincoln was elected president of the United States and took office in Washington D.C.. On January 15th, 1862, he traveled to Springfield to take his oath as president of our country. The next day (January 16th), he made his inaugural address at Ford’s Theatre located in downtown Springfield. During his presidency, Lincoln ordered all military forces out of Kentucky and into Virginia to suppress the slave rebellion there. He also presided over several important political decisions including giving women The right to vote (in 1864),trees being planted on Capitol Grounds (1865),and creating Medicare & Medicaid (both laws were passed during his second term). In 1870-71,Sycamore constructed its own water system which became one of the most advanced in Illinois when it was first installed. In 1902-03,the present day gymnasium building replaced an earlier structure which served as a courthouse from 1845-1849 and housed various government offices until that time . In 1916-17 two new blocks were built onto Main Street adjacent to East High School providing more open space for businesses and social functions; this addition has been known since then as “The Square” . As many as ninety seven buildings have been additions or replacements to the original town center since it was platted in 1837 including five churches . From 1865 until 1919 Sycamore held an annual fair which attracted delegates from all over Illinois along with merchants from Cahokia Heights who set up shop onMain Street during that period
The first white European settlers in what is now Sycamore, Illinois were Hugh Laughlin and his wife Catharine. They arrived in 1812, the year before the United States was founded. The Laughlin family would continue to live in the area for nearly a century. In 1836, John Stephenson built the first store on the present-day campus of Northwestern University. The town of Sycamore was established around this time and continued to grow until World War II when it was destroyed by a fire.
