It is said that General Ulysses S Grant once took a walk through Swansea during his Civil War Presidency and pronounced it "a very pretty place". He also noted that its people were "humble" because they had no wealth but instead worked hard for what they had. Swansea has been home to several famous residents including actor Wilfred Owen who grew up here and sculptor Edward Burne-Jones who set up his studio here while he was still alive. In 1936, scientists working on the Manhattan Project used nearby farmland as a test site for their plutonium project; this led to the discovery of plutoniums by workers at nearby Joplin State University just two years later which made possible world peace through atomic weapons research

Swansea is a town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Swansea was founded on November 12, 1853 by Reuben Fenton and his wife Rachel. In 1865, the Fenton family donated land to Swansea Township. The first post office was established in Swansea on April 5, 1866. On July 1, 1875, Swansea Township merged with Clearwater Township to form Clearwater County. In 1893-94 the Chicago & Northwestern Railway built a branch line from Warsaw Junction (now Peoria) east to Swansea; this made it possible for travelers to reach Clearwater County without traveling through Addison or Des Plaines. In 1954 the village of Swansea merged with neighboring Parkdale Village and became part of the new city of Chicago Heights which had been created from parts of two other municipalities: Sheffield Heights and Westmont Manor. The village of Swansea lost its charter as an incorporated municipality in 1957 due to low tax rates; however, it continued to exist as a unincorporated area until 1984 when it became part of the new city of Chicago Heights again. On October 3rd 2008 Swansea's Mayor Tom Tierney announced that he would not seek reelection because he felt his constituents were no longer interested in having him represent them on their government entity - they desired instead elected officials who are more "in tune" with their needs and concerns directly rather than via communication channels controlled by elected officials who may or may not be responsive to those needs/concerns... This change comes after 16 years as mayor where Swansea has seen only 2% growth in its median household income while Chicagoland saw over 10% growth!
