Swansea, Illinois is a town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,332 at the 2010 census. Swansea is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town has a rich agricultural history dating back to the 1800s. Swansea was one of three towns that formed the Quincy-on-the-Lake Micropolitan Statistical Area on November 3, 2007. The first settlers in Swansea were James and Ann Smith who arrived in 1827 from upstate New York and founded a cabin on Mount Carmel farm near present day Swansea Township. James died young and his widow Ann raised their nine children here before moving to what is now Quincy in 1848. In 1854 they acquired 640 acres (250 hectares) of land north ofpresent day Swansea Township for $1 per acre ($35 per hectare). They named their new location "Swansea". In 1865 it was reported that eighty percent of the wheat grown in McLean County was being shipped west to Chicago by wagon train because no other transportation existed then or since. The road leading from Warsaw to Quincy became known as the "Wheat Road". This began the construction of mills and churches that continue today including Our Lady Of Lourdes Catholic Church which opened its doors in 1907 and is still used today as a parish center with offices for various local governments such as township government, schools, waterworks etc., as well as providing housing for many locals during Holy Week services when large crowds are expected; this too continues into 2018! On July 1st 1886 David Gorman settled south side of present day Swansea Township after traveling overland from Galena, Illinois where he had been working as a farmer since age 10 while living with his family on an estate owned by his father John Gorman Jr.. He purchased 800 acres (300 hectares) between Warsaw Road east of present day Swansea Township line and Polk Creek where he built what would become known as Gorman's Corners which included his home now called 'Gorman's Tower'. From here he started planting corn which would be transported down Polk Creek to far away Chicago for market making purposes each week until railroads came along and made shipping transport much more economical than having men walk around carrying sacks full of food all week long! By 1860 some twenty homes were built on this site - ten two story frame wood buildings surrounded by earth mounds 20 feet high (). One could buy good farmland hereabouts for around $2/acre ($) with horses & carts running between fields turningip ponds & thence selling produce at local markets throughout Northwestern America – unheardof at this time! Today only about 4 acres (0.16 hectares) remains within original boundaries though modern development has obliterated virtually all evidence thereof leaving onlyruins visible & partially concealed beneath current surface Streetscape! It should also be noted that not everyone who lived here enjoyed farming – there were also several families who engaged in manufacturing activities such as spinning wheel manufactories (), boatbuilding (& later turbines), soap production (& later plastics))& even becoming involved politically early on thru participation w/John Paine (19th Ward Alderman)

In addition to its economic importance, Swansea also became known for its beautiful neighborhoods which were built around large blocks of land on the banks of the Des Plaines River. The population of Swansea peaked at about three thousand in 1910 and slowly declined thereafter due to various factors such as World War I and Prohibition. However, despite its struggles during these times (and even afterward), Swansea has experienced some significant growth since then including becoming an international center for information technology industry.
