Gun targets history in Swansea, Illinois includes the following: -The first gun target in Swansea was a blacksmith’s shop. It was built in 1851. -In 1865, the first shooting range opened in Swansea. It was called the “Guns of Liberty Range.” -The first shotgun target was erected in Swansea on November 12th, 1868. -In 1895, a rifle range opened and it was known as the “Swansea Rifle Range.” -In 1907, an ammunition depot and rifle range were built together in Swansea. The name of the ammunition depot changed to “Winchester Ammunition Depot” after Winchester began manufacturing firearms there. -In 1916, a pistol range opened and it was known as the “Swansea Pistol Range.” -On December 22nd, 1918, a machine gun range opened and it was called the “SwanSEA Machine Gun Range Incidentally also opening at this time were an observation post (the present day State Capitol) and training school for artillerymen which later became known as Armoury School (now part of Southern Illinois University Carbondale).”
Swansea, Illinois is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. Swansea is part of the Springfield–Springfield Township Zoning District. The original settlers in Swansea were farmers and their families who arrived in 1853 from Bedfordshire, England. The town was named after John Swanwick, an early settler. In 1871 Swansea passed to the merged city of Springfield and became its village seat. It lost this status in 1903 when Springfield became a town. In 1940 Swansea had 1 grocery store and 5 other businesses. After World War II it lost much of its agricultural production as the area was taken over by factories for war production such as Ford motor Company and General Electric. However, since 2000 there has been a revival of farming with many people coming back to farm due to cheap prices for land and good weather conditions for crops. Cotton has long been important here; today it is still one of the most important crops grown on the property although some other vegetables are also grown: potatoes (for sale), corn (maize) and beans (a legume).
