Swansea is a city in south-central Illinois, United States. The population was 12,752 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kendall County. Swansea is located on the confluence of the Des Plaines River and the Chicago River. The first Europeans to visit Swansea were French traders in 1673, who named it "Anse aux Meadows" after one of their vessels that had been sunk there; they also noted its' rich agricultural potential. The town was platted in 1822 by Captain James Kapp and his partner Solomon Northrup; it became a dry goods store and post office until 1856. In 1868, Swansea Mayor John Fenton consecrated an Episcopal church which burned down in 1904; within 5 years, he founded another parish church, Saint Michael's Church (now First Baptist) with $5 from citizens subscriptions. In 1898–99, during World War I Liberty ships called "Healy" and "Hazelton", carrying food for soldiers at sea brought some 740 people overland to Swansea from Illinois ports including Chicago and Rockford —the largest single disembarkation of civilians ever made on American soil at that time -and many more passengers arrived by boat as refugees following Germany's declaration of war on Austria on April 14th that year. Many residents had gathered near the old Goose Creek Bridge which spans the Des Plaines River just upstream from wherepresent-day Polk Road meets Route 66 During much of World War II Swansea was bombed hard by Allied aircrafts numerous times causing extensive damage to business buildings both inside and outside the city limits but no loss or fatalities occurred to any individuals or businesses other than what could be incurred as a result of firefighting efforts rather then direct bombing operations which were becoming increasingly common as air forces became more specialized over time due largely to advances in weaponry such as strategic bombers using radar technology rather than naked eyesight . Despite this lack of casualty rates during wartime RAF raids against targets within medieval wallsed cities like Dresden or Hamburg few locals ever received death sentences for participating even though heavy damage sometimes resulted .....Swansea has seen high levels of development both inward and outward throughout its history despite often difficult circumstances with only small portions having lasting impacts either positive or negative ......Swansea's unique character can best be described as being all around you whether you are looking out upon its picturesque waterfalls cascading down into clear blue Lake Michigan or enjoying intimate conversations with local residents while sipping wine at one's favorite local restaurant ....
