Swansea, Illinois is a small town in the Sangamon County seat of Swansea. The population was 1,858 at the 2010 census. Swansea is located on the east bank of the Raccoon River and has a mix of rural and urban neighborhoods. The first settlers in Swansea were farmers who arrived around 1815. By 1830, there were two stores open in Swansea and seven people living on the town square. In 1840, an act was passed that established Custer College in Swansea. The college became a national center for education after it was purchased by John Dickson Harper in 1868. In 1865, Welsh-born General Ulysses S. Grant visited Swansea to inspect army troops being quartered at that time on the east side of the river near present-day Warsaw Avenue and Pulaski Boulevard. Grant was so impressed with what he saw that he offered to donate land to make Swansea more habitable for soldiers barracks and also provide them with school facilities as well as a church and cemetery.
