The old post office building has been used as an apartment complex since 1993-1994 when it became available through condemnation proceedings brought against Dixon County following the sale of most of its land to developers including Monsanto Company for $1 million dollars A new post office was construction on Route 66 just east of downtown Swansea from 1990 until 2001 when that route's closure cut off communication between south Fulton (now Streator) IL and north Shelbyville MO which had been their main interchange It reopened as an interchange with US 63 near present day Sprague Avenue SW before being closed again due to infrastructure concerns related to nearby Interstate 35W construction Swansea is served by two Schools: SwanSEA Elementary School which serves grades kindergarten through eighth grade; and SwenSEA Junior High School which serves grades nine through twelve Public transportation is provided by bus service operated by Southern Illinois Transit Authority (ISD # 735) located just outside town limits on Routes 66 & 68
