Swannakee,population 9,812. Swansea is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 12,471 at the 2000 census. Swansea is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is within the boundaries of Cook County. Swansea is one of two towns in Kane County that are not part of Chicago; the other is O'Fallon. The first people to inhabit what now known as Swansea were natives of Canada who came overland from British North America in 1805-06 under the name "Guelph". They were followed by another group from Canada in 1820 who called themselves "Algonquin". The first settlers arrived around 1830 and built log cabins on a site where present day Swanick Road and Park Avenue intersect today. In 1836 James Biddle organized a Methodist church here with Rev. John Wesley serving as pastor until his death in 1840. In 1847 Ebenezer Dodge founded what would become Dodge Manufacturing Company which manufactured cannons for the US Union army during the American Civil War In 1865 extension railway lines were built through Kane County connecting it with Carbondale, Elgin and other villages to the east orwest and giving Swanick Township its first post office (1866). By 1870 there were over 100 residents living in Swansea Township including merchants such as Wm Fenton & Brothers storekeepers/ grocers.; Jno Aiken Coal mine owner; H P Swayne blacksmiths; Geo Fenton miller; Thos Gresham painter etc cattle raising became an important industry due to easy access to good grazing land east of Carbondale started by early settlers Evan Thomas (1840-1914), George Brown (1850-1921) & their families cotton ginning began about 1880 yielding high quality yarn for export but soon gave way to Machine shops producing goods such as clotheslines for homespun fabrics woolen twill fabric being produced until World War II when direct marketing replaced spinning also saw production of automobiles parts made from plastic . Swannakee was designated an official village by county government on July 1st 1915 following annexation by nearby Carbondale
