Swansea, Illinois is a small town in the western part of the state of Illinois. The population was 1,954 as of the 2010 census. Swansea is located about 20 miles east of Chicago and 25 miles south-southwest of Springfield. According to the 2010 census, Swansea has a total area of 0.92 square miles (2 km²). The community was founded in 1871 by Welsh immigrants. Welsh settlers founded Swansea because they were unhappy with their treatment in Wales at the hands of English colonists. In 1916, Swansea became an unincorporated community under federal jurisdiction and remained so until 2000 when it became a city under state law. As a result, Swansea enjoys some unique advantages which include its status as both a city and municipal borough with its own government and financial system separate from that of its larger neighbor to the north-east: Chicago. Swansea's earliest inhabitants were farmers who arrived during the early 1800s seeking opportunities for land nearChicago due to new transportation technologies such as steamboats and railways that had just been developed there. By 1870, however, most residents were either recent Irish immigrants or Americans descended from British subjects who had immigrated to this country duringthe American Revolution or later periods such as during Reconstruction following America's Civil War. SwanSEA very soon achieved prominence due to its location on one of two main routes connectingChicago with St Louis via Milwaukee County; therefore it attracted businessmen and other businesspeople looking for easy access to central Illinois products while also providing convenient routes into town for travelers arriving by train through Milwaukee County Railway Station on State Street. In 1881, SwanSEA voted unanimously to adopt a constitution which provided for selfgovernment within municipal boundaries subject only to review by an appointed board known as the "Board Of Commissioners". This effectively granted SwanSEA autonomy over all matters pertaining thereto including but not limited to budgeting, zoning, streetscaping etc., within the limits set forth therein without regard whatsoever for recommendations or input from any other source save those specifically designated hereinabove pursuant thereto! A similar vote took place in 1912 prior to SwAN SEA becoming an unincorporated community under federal jurisdiction; again resulting in SelfGovernment within Municipal Boundaries with full authority vested therein without any furtherParental guidance being necessary! The term "municipality" hereunder refers exclusivelyto SwanSEA proper throughout this document notwithstanding changes made subsequent thereto consequent upon annexation by neighboring municipalitiessee Chicago & Macomb Counties annexed 1974

Swansea also has several churches including First Presbyterian Church which was built in 1901 and serves as an iconic landmark of the community. Additionally, there are several businesses in Swansea including two banks (the Swansea Valley National Bank and Southeastern Illinois National Bank), a grocery store/cafeteria/deli, three hotels/motels/Residence Inn properties, one barber shop/beauty salon/, six schools (!), four playgrounds/, one swimming pool/, one soccer field/, and one golf course/.
Swansea, Illinois was founded on December 11, 1834 by Andrew Stephenson and his family. Swansea is located in Macon County. Swansea was named after the Welsh town of Swanscombe. The village was platted on November 15, 1835 by the Stephensons. At its peak, Swansea had a population of 185 people and a school. The first post office in Swansea opened on October 1, 1836. The first store in Swansea was built on North Market Street by JF Moreland. On January 1, 1840, the village acquired land from James Ladd for $5 per acre. In 1846-47, £10 was raised to purchase a sawmill from George Condon and it became operational that same year. By 1860-61, there were six stores in Swansea with a population of 350 people and twelve businesses employing fifty employees total. In 1865-66 an addition to the school system was added which provided instruction for children between the ages of 7 and 12 years old as well as adults who could not attend school because they were too young or unable to learn due to health issues such as measles or smallpox Smallpox vaccinations were available at this time for $3 per child which funded the schools until 1903 when state funding began to be provided through local taxes
