In 1951, the Township voted to annex part of neighboring Carbondale and name it Swansea Heights after Mrs. Withers’ parents who had died in 1945 and 1949 respectively. This annexation increased the population size to over 200 people by 1966 when it officially became an incorporated village under the name Swansea Village Incorporated Corporation (SWVIC). On July 12th of that year, SWVIC submitted its request for a charter amendment which would have allowed it to become an unincorporated community separate from Cook County government with its own police department and fire department within limits set by its board of directors. After being rejected twice earlier due to lack of support from other towns in Illinois within commuting distance for such an endeavor, Swansea Village Incorporated Corporation finally received approval from county officials on October 2nd 1979 following careful consideration along with input from local residents through township meetings throughout 1978-79
