In 1985, Metropole Ammunition Corporation merged with Winchester Arms Company and became Winchester Repeating Arms Company. AllMetropole products were discontinued in 1992 when Winchester re-branded their entire product line as Winchester Magnum ammunition.
Summit is a city in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 16,844 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kane County. The city is located in the far northwestern corner of Kane County and borders Leawood to the north, West Allis to the east, Winfield to the south and Carbondale to the west. Summit is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first European settlers arrived in 1836 when John D. Rockefeller founded a sugar plantation on what would become known as Hennepin Avenue near present-day Summit Boulevard. The town of Summit was platted in 1847 by General David Dixon and named for General George Washington Sumner who had commanded Ulysses S. Grant's division during the Mexican–American War that year. In early 1861, when Illinois became a state and summits were added to its official name (eastern half of Kane County being then Cook County), Summit was one of six towns within that new jurisdiction which voted not to secede from Illinois until after Lincoln's election as President on November 4th. In 1870, when railroad construction began through central Kane County, many residents abandoned Summit for more developed areas such as West Allis or Carbondale because they thought railroads would bring wealth and opportunity instead of competition from local farmers’ markets which were slowly emerging as viable options for grocery shopping and other essential household needs during this time period In 1902 Union Pacific Railway extended their line northwestward from Chicago down Pennsylvania Street into western Kane County where they built an depot at what is now Hennepin Avenue/Summit Boulevard on land donated by General Daniel Ketchum In 1909 Park Central High School (now Parkland HS) opened its doors following years of fundraising with help from local businesses including Wrigley's Speakeasy Lounge and Jello Bites Theater This new school served students grades 9-12 until it closed in 2003 due to budget cuts By 1917 there were no schools left within reach for those living beyond downtown so Summit annexed Dutch Elm Township which lies just northeast of today's downtown area . By 1930 over 50% of Summit's population consisted exclusivelyof white citizens while only 10% black citizens resided within its boundaries
