Summit is a city in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 19,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kane County. Summit was founded on November 10, 1867 by John W. Hickey and his brother-in-law George Peabody. The first post office in Summit was established on October 25, 1871, and opened under the name of "Dover". On January 1, 1902, it was renamed to "Summit". The city's first mayor was A.J. McNamara. In 1907–1909 Summit became the home of a new high school for girls which replaced an earlier boys' school which had been built in 1892 by Jens Jensen and his father-in-law Hiram Bowen McClintock. In 1916 Summit added its own fire brigade and police department; these were part of Chicago Municipal Fire Department until 1933 when they were merged into the Kane County Sheriff's Office under then sheriff James Pugh. On October 20, 1925 – less than two months after World War II ended – Mayor McNamara announced that he would not seek re-election due to health concerns; he had been diagnosed with rectal cancer three years earlier while serving as Cook County Commissioner. Voters elected Harry Crouse as his replacement on December 3rd ballot without debate or voting required by state law (the term for Mayor wasn't until 1934). In 1957 Summit annexed much of neighboring Sleepy Hollow village to form a single municipality with a combined population of 26,497 people; however Sleepy Hollow retained its own independent government as an unincorporated community within Summit Township. This annexation process resulted in about $1 million worth of property tax revenue being collected from Sleepy Hollow residents who remained living there even though their village ceased to exist as an independent entity outside of Summit Township. The merger also created several jobs for local businesses including some that still operate today such as Pottersville Paper Company located in present day Hinsdale Township and Parkers Mills Nursery & School located across town in what is now known as Maplewood. On February 9th 1981 City Council passed Ordinance No 7259 setting out procedures for future annexations which could occur if necessary due to growth or changes within the City itself; this ordinance helped lead to current day boundaries between Manchester township (northwest border), Park Ridge (southwest border), Hinsdale Township (southeast border), Maplewood (east border) and Stone Crest (northeast border).
In 1984 Summittale participated fully in forming Champaign County through the merging of portions of Kankakee Valley Village southward from Pershing Road eastward into Champaign County along with parts from Urbana Heights westward into Champaign Counties along with most areas northward from Illinois Route 61.
