On October 24th 2006 NIU announced plans to close their main campus in Downtown Chicago due to constrained financial resources; however they will maintain operations at their other campuses throughout Cook County including: North Campus at McCormick Place; South Campus at West Side Drive; Midtown Campus near LaSalle Street; East Campus at Washington Avenue and State Street; and Clarkson University's newcampus set on 130 acres adjacent to NIU's Northwest Quadrant campus that opened in fall 2009. This period also included operation under license from Armour Corporation (); Finally after purchasing control back from Fenton circa 1930s through 1940s Hennepin Furniture company(HFC) ran it initially before becoming part of Peachtree Industries Incorporated early 1950s.} The original facade still remains today - looking towards Cicero Avenue
In 1871, the first white man set foot in Summit, Illinois. The town was organized on November 1 of that year by a group of farmers who wanted to establish a trading post and Fort Sumter as their new home. The fort was built on the site of what is now the city of Springfield, Illinois. In 1872, Summit became one of eighteen towns in Cook County, Illinois made up of land taken from the Native American tribe known as the Potawatomi. On July 4, 1888, Summit's municipal charter was amended to include a prohibition against liquor sales and transportation thereof within limits. The first store in Summit opened its doors on Main Street in 1889. A second store followed in 1893. By 1907 there were ten stores serving Summit with an average population size of over 100 people per store. On October 5, 1913, gold was discovered near Mount Rushmore National Monument making Summit an early center for mineral exploration and tourism in South Dakota Territory. The first tourist attraction located in Summit was the Gold Spike Mining Museum which opened its doors on November 15th, 1913
