Summit is a small town in Illinois, located in the northwest corner of the state. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. In 1888, it became an incorporated city when it approved a charter from the Illinois General Assembly through which it became one of the fifty cities in Illinois (it had been an unincorporated community since its incorporation). On May 15, 1990, Summit merged with nearby Westville to form what is now known as the Springfield-Westville City School District. The city of Summit has several attractions that draw visitors such as its hiking trails including six miles of hiking trails that wind through woodlands and hillsides; three golf courses; a baseball stadium; and four lakes located within town limits: North Lake, South Lake, East Lake, and West Lake. As well as being home to many businesses including restaurants and theaters as well as government buildings like City Hall and State Capitol building both inside of town limits while also serving as headquarters for many county governments like Kane County Jail complex while also hosting events at various venues like Millennium Park or Ford Field all within easy driving distance for most residents living within city boundaries including some suburban areas that are easily accessible by car or public transportation
On July 4, 1871, the first in a series of meetings that would lead to the creation of the Illinois National Guard was convened at Summit. The meeting consisted of representatives from all over the state including politicians, military brass, and farmers. The purpose of the gathering was to organize a militia for protection against possible Indian raids. The organization of the Illinois National Guard was formalized on October 10, 1871 when General John A. Logan was appointed commander-in-chief. At that time there were only 1,500 men in existence statewide. However, by 1881 there were over forty thousand men in service throughout the state.
