In 1836, Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Colt patented his first revolver featuring a revolving cylinder that allowed multiple shots to be fired at once from one weapon. This weapon was called the Colt Pistol and it became popular among law enforcement officers and military personnel alike. In 1857, Nicholas Brownell patented his ownImprovement over previous designs pertaining to Winchester Repeating Arms Company pistols (later renamed Colt Firearms Company). This new design featured an octagonal barrel with tapered edges that made it easier for shooters to hold onto their firearms while firing; this feature also allowed magazines capacity up to twenty rounds instead of six rounds typical for handguns at this time. This new style of pistol quickly become popular among farmers and local hunters who needed firepower while hunting small game such as deer or rabbits out in open country; however, due to its high price tag ($2 perRound), this weapon failed to make much headway into commercial production until after World War I when Winchester introduced its improved Model 1903 series pistols which began taking market share from Colt's pistols

Summit, Illinois is a town in Sangamon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,563 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Summit was incorporated on February 14, 1871 and named for Samuel A. summit (1813-1892), an early settler in the area. The village of Summit first developed around a school and post office which were both established in 1872. The village became a town on November 6, 1895 when it merged with the neighboring towns of Addison and Newtonville to form the city of Chicago. In 2000, the city annexed the villages of Addison and Newtonville along with parts of Brookfield Township to form the current suburbs of Chicago. As one of only two towns in Sangamon County that has never been annexed by any other county or city, Summit remains an independent community that retains its own government and police department as well as its own schools and businesses. The other town in Sangamon County is Normal City which was also once an independent community but has been absorbed into Normal City since 1998 In addition to its own economy based largely on agriculture, small businesses are also scattered throughout downtown Summit including several boutiques as well as restaurants such as McCormick & Schmick's Place; Subway; Joe's Pizza; Chinese takeout places; a hair salon/spa; a florist; two grocery stores; three hardware stores; four tire shops; four construction companies; two lodges/resorts operated by IHOP Restaurants Inc.; and two banks - First National Bank & Trust Company Of Chicago Heights and Citizens National Bank - have their headquarters located within downtown Summit Village .

Summit was founded in 1847 by Moses Wheeler and his brother, Solomon Wheeler. The town grew quickly due to the fact that it was on a major trade route connecting Chicago with St. Louis. TheWheelers donated land to the town for a courthouse, school, and church. In 1871, Summit became a village when it united with other villages in the Illinois Central Railroad District. In 1915, Summit adopted its first municipal charter which provided for an elected Mayor and two City CouncilORS. The first Mayor of Summit was John Fenton and the second was Clarence Davenport. In 1924, David Ladd became Mayor of Summit after serving three terms as City Councilor from 1923-1927; he also served on the board of directors for the Illinois Central Railroad District from 1916-1920). In 1982, Summit incorporated as a township under state law (House Bill 639). At that time, it had a population of 476 people and had five schools: North High School, South High School (now closed), Holy Cross Catholic Elementary/Secondary School, Mount Carmel Lutheran Church/School (now closed), and Park Avenue Baptist Church/Church (now closed). On July 1st of that year, all but one school—North High—closed due to financial difficulties caused by increasing demands for services from its students and staff combined with increases in tuition at local institutions such as Northwestern University; however Park Avenue Baptist Church/Church continued operations until September 30th when its building burned down after years of neglect . The only active school left in Summit were South High School which reopened on October 3rd 1998 after being vacant since 1984; North High School reopened on October 3rd 1998 as part of an effort to provide more opportunities for students who may have difficulty attending other schools because their parents could not afford to pay higher tuition rates
