A new high school () was built in 1974 on land donated by Mr. Hoyt Hoadly (). A junior college () opened in 1992 on land donated by Mrs. Betty Heineman (). The town has also hosted an agricultural exposition every other year since 1994.; summit's annual summer fair is also held at this time

Summit, Illinois was founded in 1847 by John F. Richardson as a town in Randolph County. The site of the current town was chosen because of its natural resources, including coal and lumber. In 1871, Summit became a city and remained so until 1923 when it merged with Champaign-Urbana to form the present day City of Champaign-Urbana. The merging led to several changes in the city's name, including "Summit" becoming the official name for bothChampaign-Urbana and Summit Township. The first residents of what is now Summit were farmers who established a small community near the confluence of the Kankakee River and Chicago River. By 1840, these settlers had built a stockade around their farmstead which served as their own village for about 25 years before being destroyed by Native Americans in 1848. In 1847, John F. Richardson purchased land east of City Hall on State Street in what is now downtown Champaign-Urbana from Simon Cameron and others who had been forced out of that area during the Indian Removal Act of 1830. He named his new town after himself – Summit (or Sun) Settlement – and began construction on his sawmill and other mills within two months. The first post office was opened in February 1850; it Eventually moved to its present location at State and Elm Streets in 1922 following merger with Champaign- Urbana into City of Champaign- Urbana
In 1851, a group of capitalists and entrepreneurs founded the Illinois Central Railroad. The railroad was built to connect Chicago with Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania and other points in the Midwest. The company became a dominant force in America during the early 19th century, and its headquarters were located in downtown Chicago until it relocated to Cincinnati in 1865. In 1893, the company merged with the Cleveland, Toledo and Erie Railway (CTE) to form the Penn Central Railroad. After years of financial struggles, Penn Central was merged into Conrail in 1976.
