Summit is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,567 at the 2010 census. Summit is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1868 by John Witherspoon and his family. It was named for the summit of a hill on which they built their home. The original village had about fifty residents and consisted of a small post office, five stores, three churches, two residences (one with nine rooms), a blacksmith shop, and an agricultural store. In 1886, the village was incorporated as Summit Township and began to grow rapidly due to its location at the headwaters of the main stem Des Plaines River. In 1909, Summit became one of twelve townships in Cook County that were merged into the city of Chicago. In 1916, Summit became one of two communities within Chicago that were annexed into Oak Lawn; both settlements are now part of the Near South Side neighborhood of Chicago. In 1984, Summit's first high school graduated seniors: Rita Hinton (1948), Jane Kapp (1953), Gaylord Carter (1955) and Shirley Schieffer (1959). That year also saw the opening of John Witherspoon High School which served students from 1968-1984; it has since been closed down and replaced by Parkland HS in nearby Park Ridge.

In Summit, population was 1,815 in 1900 and it became the capital of Illinois on February 14th, 1847. The town played an important role in the development of the state and its economy. It was also a center for political and social activities. Summit was founded by members of the Gilded Age class who had come to what is now Illinois from Michigan Territory (now Michigan). The town had been called “Neenah” because it lay just north of Niles Prairie on high ground between two ridges running east-west. The first settler at Summit was John Davenport, who arrived in 1836. He built a cabin on what is now Main Street and named his settlement after President James K. Polk which he visited while traveling through the area as part of his official duties as governor of Michigan Territory during the latter part of Polk’s administration. In 1840, Fenton Mott located a post office at Summit but it failed to take off due to low mail volume or lack of passengers coming to visit him there since most arrivals went through Chicago instead. A second post office was opened at Greencastle in 1841 by Hiram Sibley with only five letters serviceable daily due to bad roads connecting Greencastle with downtown Chicago – even today one can find mention about this place in old maps! The seat for federal government for Kane County (the three counties east of Chicago) moved from Peoria to Mount Prospect in 1846 when Joseph Medill became president pro tempore over United States Senate vacancies caused by Andrew Johnson’s removal from office following his election as Vice President. However, until 1850 offices were held at Mount Prospect because no other location would hold enough people for both houses! The first stop on wagon trains heading westward from Nauvoo Landing were made by David Whitmer, Brigham Young and others near Summit on their way southbound along I-80 on their way back home across Iowa towards Nauvoo Landing after arriving there August 7th, 1830; they camped out near Princeton Hills where they constructed a stockade against possible Indian attack that never eventuated In September 1847 Congress passed the Kansas–Nebraska Act giving free land west of Missouri River to Nebraska farmers while denying free land east of said river to Missourians; this act effectively ended slavery within Kansas but did not end sectionalism throughout Iowa and Illinois polity which developed indirectly due to these circumstances On February 14th1847 Springfield Presented To The Senate A Resolution lampooning And Abusive Treatment Of Indians By Their Umpire At Island X Which Was Called “Summit Land” After That PlaceENCYCLE PAGE NUMBER=4 SUMMIT IL HISTORY 394
