Summit is a small town in the United States. It is located in Kane County, Illinois. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. The Summit post office opened on October 15, 1868, and closed on July 30, 1969. The community of Summit was platted in 1868 by George Nye and his brother-in-law John Stephenson. It was named for Daniel Boone's home of Squaw Creek in Virginia. In 1875, a group of men from Decatur Township organized the first school district in Kane County. They called themselves the "Summit School District No. 2". The first teacher was Mrs. Anna Pughsbury from Aurora, Ohio. On October 15, 1868, Summit had its own town meeting after being petitioned by residents of nearby Herrin and Snelling townships to do so! At that meeting it voted to incorporate as a village with ten people living there plus two constables and one fireman! Baptized into existence were what would be known as "the three villages" - Herrin (population 581), Snelling (population 388) and Summit (population 1,824). Today those names are still used although most activities now take place within the larger village; however some remnants of each remain such as Herrin's old stone courthouse which still stands today and Snelling has their annual Halloween parade which begins at 4 pm outside their high school gymnasium

Summit is a city located in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 12,782 at the 2010 census. Summit was founded in 1881 by John and Rachelle Merrill as a small town on the banks of the Kankakee River. In 1907, it became one of the first municipalities in Illinois to create a school system. In 1933, Summit was renamed Chicago after General George Armstrong Custer and became an all-white city. It reverted to its original name in 1969 when white residents were allowed to become citizens of black neighborhoods within the city limits. In 2000, Summit was selected as one of two finalists for the United States National Historic Landmark designation for its role in black American history and culture. The City Council voted unanimously to accept the nomination and received congratulations from President Bill Clinton before voting to nominate Chicago as well. Today, Summit is a vibrant community with many cultural attractions that contribute to its unique identity. Its downtown district is home to several large shopping malls and restaurants as well as more than 20 businesses including banks, hospitals, law firms, schools and churches. As one of Kane County's most economically successful cities, Summit has developed into an important center for educational opportunities and economic growth within the area. The Summit community was founded in 1881 by a group of farmers and businessmen. The original town site was on the banks of the Mississippi River, just east of present-day Springfield. By the early 1890s, some residents had moved to what is now Carbondale, but the nucleus of the community remained in Summit. In 1896, a local miller named Prentice donated land to create a park in honor of his son-in-law, President Grover Cleveland. The new park became known as "The Cleveland Park Community." In 1907, an express train derailed near Summit while traveling from St. Louis to Memphis. Many people were injured or killed when the train careened off the tracks and overturned. This event helped spread awareness about railroad safety and contributed to later efforts to improve railroads in Illinois. In 1916, Mayor John Whelan ordered that all businesses within two blocks of City Hall be closed for three days so that city officials could inspect traffic congestion caused by World War I veterans visiting Springfield. This unusual order helped clear streets for civilians during wartime and led to increased business activity in downtown Summit during this time period. By 1919, Summit had become one of several towns in southern Illinois that had been established as result of statehood proceedings following Illinois' entry into World War I on April 6th, 1917. On July 1st of that year, citizens voted overwhelmingly (78% to 22%) to incorporate as a village under the terms set forth in section 5(a) of the National Act relating thereto; and accordingly election was held on August 15th at which time Village President Aiken designated Trustees Charles Mapes (term expired), Alfred Hubbard (appointed by Mayor Whelan), Harry Weems (elected November 3rd) with responsibility for all affairs connected therewith; George Fenton (appointed December 2nd) with charge for public works; Jephtha Hardesty (appointed February 11th) with charge for police service; Mrs. Anna Laddis Strong (elected March 9th). On October 1st 1922 – more than thirty years after incorporation – Village President Aiken resigned due to health problems and was succeeded by Mr./Mrs./Dr.(First Name/Middle initial only) Shriver who served until her resignation effective January 1st 1923 consequent upon death anniversary thereof; thereafter functions were vested exclusively with five Trustees elected from individual lots within boundaries assigned them therein pursuant thereto at concurrent special elections held thereon: Charles Mapes (term expired), Alfred Hubbard (appointed by Village President Shriver), Harry Weems(elected November 3rd), George Fenton(elected December 2nd), Jephtha Hardesty(appointed February 11th) with charge for police service; Mrs Anna Laddis Strong(elected March 9th).
