In this way Summit had four annexations total: Logan (July 1907), Albion (October 1917), Groveland (October 17th 1917) and Johnston Heights (April 20th 1951). After three decades as an unincorporated community summit became one of Chicagos most populous cities with over 500 residents according to 2000 census data In recent years there has been discussion about annexing neighbouring communities such as Maywood or Lemont as those municipalities have larger populations than Sangamon Hills which makes annexation more difficult due to state law which restricts annexations to municipalities with a population greater than 5,000 residents

On September 15, 1912, President William McKinley delivered his last speech at Chicago's Union Station before he was impeached by Congress; this event is also celebrated as National McKinley Day. In 1925 Summit voters approved a $10 million bond issue to support local cultural attractions such as libraries and museums. The first major project completed with the money was building a library which opened in 1927). The post-World War II years were difficult for Summit because many residents left for jobs in larger cities or outside of America due to changes in technology and increasing costs associated with living within commuting distance of large metropolitan areas such as Chicago or New York City (the cost of living increased dramatically during this time). However, some residents did return after leaving for better economic opportunities elsewhere.
