Summit is a small town in Illinois, located on the border of Decatur and Rockford. The population was 7,806 at the 2010 census. Summit was founded in 1834 by Methodist missionaries, who named it after Mount Sinai, in present-day Israel. The town had its first post office in 1836. In 1865, Summit became part of the newly created Rockford County and remained so until 1972 when it merged withDecatur County to form Kane County. The Summit School District was established in 1907 and has been serving students from kindergarten through twelfth grade since then. A new high school opened in 2009 and serves grades thirteen through fifteen; it is one of only two high schools within Kane County that are not part of the Chicago public school system. Summit is home to four churches—Methodist Episcopal (1834), Presbyterian (1868), Lutheran (1898), and Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (1901)—and several businesses including a grocery store, tire shop, bank branch, restaurant, doctor's office/clinic, post office/mail service center and an auto dealership. The largest employer in Summit is the community library which employs over 130 people. Summit also offers a variety of extracurricular activities for locals and visitors alike including golfing club memberships available at various courses throughout Kane County as well as country football teams that compete in state tournaments each year; soccer leagues for girls and boys; arts groups such as poetry readings or music festivals; baseball games televised live on FOX Sports Midwest; hiking trails accessible from many points within the city limits; summertime concerts at local parks during various stages of preparation before staging their own shows optionallynearby while residents enjoy fireworks displays around Independence Day weekend; ice cream socials organized by many organizations every few months during different seasons likesummertime or wintertime especially around St Patrick's Day or All Souls' Day

Summit is a city in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 10,495 at the 2010 census. It lies on the border of Kane and McHenry counties. The first permanent settler in Summit was John Sheehan who arrived in 1836. From 1857 to 1860, three brothers - Daniel Sheehan, Michael Sheehan and Patrick Sheehan - also established a farmstead near what is now the intersection of WestMain Street and SouthFirst Avenue north of Summit Lake. Their father had been born in Ireland but immigrated to America when he was just sixteen years old. In 1858, Daniel built a small log cabin on the edge of Summit Lake while his brothers started building log homes around it over the next few years. The house still stands today as part of the Park Tower Historic District which includes several other pioneer homes located around Summit Lake between Center Road (now US-8) and North Main Street (now US-6). In 1862, Samuel Pringle purchased 160 acres east of present day Uniontown from John Waddell for $1 per acre……….Samuel Pringle's purchase represented one of the earliest land purchases by an American seeking settlement in central Illinois….. After spending some time surveyorizing this new land he announced his intention to establish a town site on high ground east of Uniontown where he could have easy access to water power for his mills which he planned to start up soon……….In 1865 Samuel Pringle sold his land adjacent to current day Uniontown for $5 per acre…..The first town meeting held within this new town was February 26th 1865 with James Robertson presiding…………… Thanks largely to James Robertson's leadership, erection of local roads and establishment of schools were among early successes enjoyed by residents…………later that same year the first post office opened in town with mail sent from Uniontown only once a week…………………… By 1870 there were two churches and twenty four households living within town limits…………………… By 1880 there were six churches and seventy five households living within town limits…………………… On April 1st 1881 James Robertson passed away after serving as mayor for six years & Town Meeting unanimously elected Isaac Trimble as his replacement
On July 6, 1847, the first public meeting of the Illinois Legislature took place at the home of Samuel Sparks in Summit. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss a bill proposing that Illinois become a state. The original legislation proposed by Congressman John P. Morton did not pass and was not considered a success. However, on October 2, 1847, Representative George H. Smith introduced a new bill which became law with only one vote against it (the representative from Champaign County).
