Summit was founded in 1847 as a small farming community on the current site of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. When access to education became available to more people and when railroads developed in Summit, businesses quickly grew and prospered. Many of these businesses are still in operation today including JCPenney (founded 1870), Northwestern Mutual (founded 1902), Ford Motor Company (founder 1908), Sears Roebuck & Co. (founder 1911), and Wernher von Braun's Sun Belt Research Center (founded 1958). The first post office was established in 1847 and closed in 1893. The first school opened in 1851 and closed in 1951; it was later reopened as Central High School. In 1907, Summit became one of the townships that formed DuPage County. The population peaked at 3,600 in 1920 but declined to 1,970 by 1930 due to World War II affects such as rationing along with other changes wrought by technological advancements such as television which had not yet been invented at that time. However, by 1940s there were again rising numbers with over 4,000 people living within the township limits during peak years In 1955-1956 Summit annexed part of neighbouring Champaign Township which had increased its population from 1,681 residents to 3,512 residents since 1954 In 1962-1963 another annexation took place resulting in the addition of land totaling . At this point Summit had reached its current size with over 4 km² (.25% ofDuPage County)

In 1893, Chicago amalgamated with other smaller towns and villages around it to form the city of Chicago. At that time, Summit had only a few hundred residents. By 1907, however, Summit had developed into one of the largest cities in America with over 2 million residents. It has since grown even further and is now home to over 7 million people across its metropolitan area.
