In 1886, millionaire Andrew Carnegie donated $5 million to build an industrial park adjacent to his Steel Mill at Steel City; this led to what is now Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company being founded there that same year by Cyrus Vance Sr., brother of then-Governor Adlai Stevenson (served1968-74). That same year saw another landmark event when Samuel Morse set up shop in Summit as a telegraph operator with his own line from his home here to Washington D.C.; this allowed limited communication between America's capital city and rural areas much closer to its heartland for the first time ever! The town boasted its own newspaper at that time too - The Herald - which continued publication until it went out of business in 1902 due to financial troubles related thereto! Summit experienced significant growth following World War II as many businesses moved into its area including Ford Motorsports Inc., General Dynamics Land Systems Inc., Monsanto Co., ITT Corporation (later Microsoft), PepsiCo USA Inc., Calumet Paper Products Co., Jardine Matheson & Co.. As these businesses shifted jobs away from downtown Springfield they created new opportunities for people living nearby such as retail workers at local stores like Sears Roebuck & Co.. Today there are over 100 businesses operating inside of the boundaries of Summittown!
