Summit is a town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. Summit was first settled in 1851 by Americans from New York and Pennsylvania. On May 25, 1865, Union soldiers burned down the courthouse in what is now Summit to prevent it from being used as a Confederate base of operations during the American Civil War. The town originally consisted of two-thirds Indian territory and one-third white land grant. A post office was established at Summit in 1854, and until 1873 it was called "Newburgh". A new courthouse was built in 1865 and named for General Ulysses S. Grant; it served as the seat of government until 1931 when Springfield took over that function. In 1927, Summit became an incorporated village with a population of about 200 people; however, it failed to make much progress until 1990 when it adopted its current name of "Summit". In 2000, Summit had some ugly confrontations between Native Americans and local whites which led to violence on both sides; this finally stopped after community members came together and formed a peacekeeping patrol known as The Warriors forPeace (). In 1846, the Illinois General Assembly passed a bill authorizing the founding of a college in Summit, Illinois. The first president of what would become Western Reserve University was appointed to set up the school. On July 1, 1847, Western Reserve College opened its doors with twenty-one students. It was the second college in Illinois and one of only two in America at that time. The university quickly became successful and by 1850 had graduated over one hundred students. In 1861, it merged with another Illinois college, Normal School (later renamed DePauw University), creating the largest collegiate institution in America at that time. In 1875, Western Reserve College amalgamated with Yale University to form what is now known as Brown University. Western Reserve's success continued through World War II when it served as an air base for American bombers during World War II Santa Anita Lake Area Bombing Range from 1942-1945 and again from 1957-1960 during Operation Zeus. Today, Western Reserve remains one of America's leading colleges and universities with more than 2200 undergraduate students and over 120 graduate programs throughout six faculties including arts/ humanities/ sciences/ engineering/ business/ health sciences/(health policy).
The Summit, Illinois town was founded in 1834. The name of the town is derived from a location on a high hill near the current site of the town. The first settler in what is now Summit was Nicholas Sennett. He and his family moved to the area in 1834 from Sangamon County, Illinois.
