Summit is a town in Sangamon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. The Summit School District serves the town. The first settler to reside in what is now Summit Township was Levi Emmons in 1827. A post office called "Summit" was established in 1837, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1853. The first school located within the township was built by Mrs. John Ladd on July 25, 1840; it operated for three years before being moved to what is now the village of Montezuma. On July 1, 1845, Summit became part of Sangamon County when it was organized from parts of Blackford and Macomb counties. In 1861, a sawmill started operations on the south side of summit creek south of present day State Street and east of Stephenson Avenue. This mill continued operating until 1903 when it closed because of lack of customers and low yields from the milling process due to variable levels of water availability around that time. In 1915 a new sawmill began production on the north side of summit creek west of Stephenson Avenue which lasted until 1928 when it also ceased operations due to lack of customers or an available location for storage after repairs were made to an existing building on Stephenson Avenue (now Montezuma High School). On November 5, 1865, Abraham Lincoln delivered his last public speech from Mount Zion Baptist Church while standing atop Mount Zion hill overlooking downtown Springfield as part-time justiceofthe peace for Sangamon County; he finished his speech by mounting a platform erected nearby from where he could see Springfield below and waved as attendees took their leave before continuing downMount Zion Hill towards Springfield Proper - this event is widely considered one Of The Greatest Speeches ever Given In America And Is still remembered today by many people all across America To this very day! Summit is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Summit was founded in 1847 as a station on the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad. It became a town in 1892. Summit is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1847, two men named George Wills and James Shields founded Summit on the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad near what is now Lombard Avenue in west suburban Cook County. They named their new community after Mount Union College in Ohio where they had been classmates at DePauw University. In 1850, they built a sawmill and grist mill on the site of their current post office which still stands today. The first store opened in December 1850 by Mrs Virginia Haggerty and her husband John Haggerty Sr.. The first postmaster was Amos Ketchum who served from December 1850 to January 1851; John Aiken filled that role from February 21st until May 8th, 1861; Hiram Boudreau served from November 5th until his death on November 20th 1865; Willis Atkins took over during his term until he resigned due to ill health on October 7th 1865; Prentiss Weems filled that position for one year from January 26th 1870 to February 24th 1870; Wm Mears arrived on December 4th 1870 with his family and opened up the first mercantile business there before moving into retail sales three years later when father John closed down his sawmill to start an agricultural paper-making enterprise called J & W Mears Paper Company Ltd., also known as J&W Mills Corporation (later part of US Steel). On July 1st 1889, Mr Samuel Fenton became the first residentpostmaster with duties including issuing postage stamps and preparing local newspapers while Mrs Jane Freeman held office as mail carrier for residents only until her death on October 3rd 1888 due to childbirth complications nine days after becoming postmistress which marked the end of female officials serving within Summits limits through mail service only. On September 25, 1893 Summit incorporated as a village under charter number 95-711. By 1896 it had grown so large that it required incorporation once again but this time under charter number 98-527.
