Throughout most of its history, Summit has been home to gunmakers who have played an important role in the manufacturing of firearm Barrels. Summit is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 25,362 at the 2010 census. Summit is the county seat of Cook County and home to the Chicago White Sox baseball team. It is also an important commercial center for the region surrounding it. The first settlements in what would become Summit were made by fur traders in 1814 and 1815. By 1832, there were only two small villages remaining in what would become Summit: One on the east side of State Street between Rush Road and Milwaukee Avenue, and one on the west side of West Cary Avenue between Rush Road and Wrightwood Avenue. In 1834, John Cranch arrived from Canada with his family to found a village called Clearfield on land he had purchased from Massasoit Indians near present-day Mundelein Lake. Clearfield's first settler was David Dudley who built a cabin on a bluff overlooking State Street in1835. In 1840–41, George Stephenson erected a sawmill just south of where Clearfield now stands on Mill Creek. The mill became known as Stephenson Mills after its founder; it still operates today as a heritage site managed by Friends of Mill Creek Preserve Inc.. In 1850 David Dudley's grandson Amos Dudley founded Sheffield Park which lies along Sheffield Drive adjacent to modern day Gratz ParkHigh School which opened in 1896 nearby). On July 3rd 1870 John Aiken founded Summit Grove Cemetery which lies across from present day Gratz Park Elementary School (opened in 1895) opposite Northern Illinois University campus - this cemetery remains inactive today but provides namesake for current Gratz Park High School building completed in 2006 next door). In 1865 James Hamer established another small village named Highland Springs about northeast of Summit Grove Cemetery; Highland Springs' first settler was Jno Hamer who constructed a log cabin atop Drum Hill near present-day North Holyoke Drive and northwest of Interstate 55 exit 6B (the current northern border of Highland Springs). From these villages grew many more over time including Springdale (founded by Amos Dudley's great-grandson Hiram Seymour), Oak Lawn/Upper Arlington (founded by Samuel Morse), Niles (founded by Augustus Kelley), Palmer Woods/Shrewsbury Township (founded by Anthony Potter), Mount Vernon Heights/Northbrook Township (founder unknown but likely Abraham Lincoln assassination conspirator William Booth’s birthplace) as well as various smaller communities dotting Cook County until 1959 when all but one – Shrewsbury Township – lost their town status due to population growth or annexation into neighboring municipalities such as Skokie or Winnetka without any vote being taken among residents thereof! The Blackhawks professional sports team has been based at Wrigley Field since 1917 when they took root there following their merger with the American LeagueChicago White Stockings franchise

Summit is a town in Rock County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,531 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village of Summit was incorporated in 1871 and merged with Summit Township in 1915. The first people to live in what is now Summit were the Potawatomi Native Americans. They were followed by the Mennonites who started to arrive in numbers during the 1830s and 1840s. A group of Swedes settled here around 1855 and started a grocery store that became known as "The Svengali". During Prohibition, many businesses closed their doors because they could not get government liquor licenses. After repeal, most businesses reopened but some did not until after 1949 when prohibition was repealed altogether in Illinois. A post office called Summit was established in 1871, and remained operational until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1915, Summit Township merged with neighboring Summit County to form a larger community which still exists today as a bedroom community for Chicagoans near Lake Michigan on the south side of the city limits. In 2002, the township disbanded and its residents voted to join Park Forest Township which lies to the north within Chicago's city limits
On July 4, 1871, the first Summit Ford car dealership opened in Summit, Illinois. The dealership was started by W. D. "Bill" Stephenson and his brother-in-law J. C. Hildebrandt and was located on the north side of the village near the intersection of U.S. Route 34 and Indian Road. The following year, Stephenson sold his business to Hildebrandt and began selling cars directly to consumers through a showroom on State Street in Summit village. The company continued to grow throughout the 1870s and 1880s, eventually opening a second store in 1892 within city limits of Springfield, Illinois. By 1902, SummitFord had become one of Springfield's most important automotive dealerships with an inventory that included more than 100 vehicles including luxury models such as Rolls-Royces and Maseratis. In 1916, Stephenson died suddenly at age 72 after years of successful operation at SummitFord; his son WIlliam succeeded him as president and CEO of the company until his death in 1948.
