In Summit, Illinois, the oldest gun shop in the state is located within the city limits. It is called The Gun Shop and has been operation since 1876. The store has a rich history that includes selling firearms to residents of Summit and surrounding communities. In addition to firearms, The Gun Shop also sells ammunition, tools, and other items related to shooting. The Gun Shop first opened its doors in 1876 as a small-town tailor shop. At that time, it was one of the few businesses in Summit that sold weapons and ammunition. For many years, The Gun Shop was owned by Mr. John Hickey who also served as vice president of the local bank. In 1951, Mr. Hickey passed away and his wife purchased the business from him. Mrs. Hickey continued to operate The Gun Shop until her death in 1984. From then on, it was operated by her son-in-law John Pfleger until 1990 when he passed away too; however, his widow still managed the store until her death in 2004." The store's biggest clientele were residents of Summit who needed firearms for their personal protection or for hunting purposes; however, over time other customers have included people from nearby cities such as Chicago and Peoria because they found out about The GunShop's availability from its reputation for quality products and reasonable prices." Since 1978 whenTheGunShop began selling t-shirts with firearm images printed on them (the first ever), sales have totaled more than 1 million shirts! Many t-shirts are auctioned off each year including some that go for hundreds of dollars."

The first rifle in Summit, Illinois was a shotgun. A man named Edward Smith owned and operated the only gunsmith shop in town. In 1837, he made the first rifle in Summit with a 12-gauge shotgun barrel.
Summit is a town in Butler County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,721 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Summit was founded in 1875 as an agricultural village with a population of fewer than 100 residents and today has over 12,000 residents. The town's economy is based on agriculture, forestry, and fishing. The first white person to visit Summit was John Wesley Powell in 1912 while he was on his way to see the Rocky Mountains from the east. He stopped at Summit Lake for lunch and sketched out what would become Park City on his map which he gave to fellow explorer William McKinley Jr., who donated it to the National Park Service in 1916. In 1925, coalmining began operations in Summit and by 1930 there were over 350 mines operating in the area including some owned by Ford Motor Company. Mining ended around 1977 when Akron-based RCA Electric retired all its mines here except for one that continued until 1984; this mine yielded more than 2 million pounds (1/2 ton) of coal each day during its heyday. By 2000 only two small mines remained open: one operated by Peabody Coal and another by Massey Energy Corporation. In early 2006 new economic development began near downtown Summit with plans for mixed-use development including apartments, retail stores, restaurants and hotels along with an election plaza overlooking downtown where public events could be held or rallies/demonstrations planned outside of city limits could take place without obstruction from city officials or protesters who often occupied city parks throughout their stay

On November 9, 1958, the National Rifle Association (NRA) announced their intention to produce a "T-shirt for every American" that would include NRA guidelines on how to safely shoot firearms. The first NRA T-shirts were produced in 1959.
Summit, Illinois was founded on November 2, 1847 by a group of men led by Isaac Lyon. The town was named in honor of General George Washington's Mount Vernon estate and became a center for the agricultural industry. Summit grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s, thanks to its location at the intersection of two majorroads and its access to natural resources. In 1907, Summit became the capital of Illinois. It remained that way until 1915 when Champaign-Urbana took over as the state capital. During World War I, Summit played an important role in supplying munitions to Europe. The town also produced oilseed crops such as maize and soybeans for use in cooking fuel. In 1929, Summit became one of the first communities in Illinois to adopt a municipally-owned water system. The system remains in operation today. In recent years, Summit has become known for its arts and culture scene. One notable event was the Chicago Fringe Festival which took place from August 25-September 1st at Lincoln Hall in downtown Chicago. Other events include music festivals such as Lollapalooza and CMJ Festivals which take place throughout the year at various venues around town.
On July 4, 1871, a small group of men and women from Summit, Illinois gathered around the Monument to the Illini while they celebrated the end of their war with neighboring Indiana. The town was soon renamed "Illinois" in honor of its founders.
