In 1871, the first firearm hat was designed by a gentleman named Hiram Stevens. Stevens created the Stevens hat as a way to protect his head from the sun and wind while hunting. The hat was made of felt and had a band around the neck that went over the ears. The hat was also decorated with various insignia, such as an eagle feather or a star. In 1922, firearms manufacturer Samuel Colt introduced a new type of firearm hat that became known as the Colt Police Hat. This hat featured two panels on each side of the head which could be opened to allow access to all weapons inside. In 1934, firearms manufacturer Smith & Wesson began producing their own handguns in cooperation with Springfield Armory. As part of this partnership, Smith & Wesson produced hats featuring safety devices, such as triggers that would stop fire when touched. Around this time period, many different manufacturers offered their own unique Firearms Hats designs, some becoming quite popular while others failed to make much impact. By 1938, Firearms Hat production had ended at Smith & Wesson and mostHat variants were discontinued thereafter (save for some model conversions). However, through licensing agreements and other partnerships over subsequent years many different companies continued to produce Firearms Hats under various brand names until 1986 when all Manufacturing ceased completely in Summit Township IL

Summit is a small town located in the northwest corner of Illinois. The population was 2,612 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Quad Cities metropolitan area and the Chicago metropolitan area. Summit is known for its agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism industries. The first Europeans to visit Summit were French traders in 1673. The first settlers arrived in 1836, when a group led by Captain John White crossed the state line from Missouri into Illinois. They named their new community after General David Dixon's brother-in-law, Samuel Hill summit County (now Summit), Indiana Territory. In 1838, General James K. Polk sent troops to suppress a slave uprising there and discovered that the people were wild Indians who had been living on nearby Mount Rushmore for more than 100 years! A treaty was signed in 1840 which ended Indian Wars throughout Illinois and Minnesota; this Treaty also recognized American sovereignty over these areas. In 1847, gold was discovered along the Sangamon River in north central Illinois; this discovery led to an intense gold rush that began in earnest around 1850. The population of Summit rapidly grew as miners came to find rich veins ofGold ore near their homes or prospecting for silver and other minerals underlayng hills covered with switchgrass prairies unsuitable for farming or grazing cattle or sheep because of their steepness or lack thereof water supplies necessary for efficient operation of large machinery used during those days.(1) The first train into Summit arrived on November 11th,1868 from Carbondale junction onthe Chicago & Quincy Railroad). On November 12th 1870 passenger trains reached Summittown from Peoria via Belvidere Junction on March 31st 1870 (2). Coal mining ceased operations about 1930 but production continues at various mills today including: Pioneer Coal Company (1967), Park Mines (1992), Keystone Mines Manufacturing Co.(2002) and finally Consolidated Mining Industry LP(2006). A locomotive depot served many local mines until it closed shop about 1975 due to heavy use during high commodity prices which then caused a slowdown in production.(3) Today there are still some operational mine workings such as: West Point Mine - operated by Plains Exploration Inc since 1978 million tons of coal mined since 1898 with plans to reopen soon(4); Gantt #5 shaft – abandoned since 1984; North Star No 7 shaft – abandoned since 1984; Western Star No 5 shaft – abandoned since 1984; Payette No 1 shaft – abandoned since 1984 while Payette No 2 shaft continued working intermittently until it closed shop in 1997(5).
