Summit is a small town located in Macomb County, Illinois. The population was 1,521 at the 2000 census. The town is named after George Washington Summit, a Congressman from Ohio who served in the United States Congress from 1801 to 1805. Summit was founded by James S. Kerr and his family in 1855 as a farming community on the eastern edge of what is now Macomb County. In 1870, John Fenton established an iron works in nearby Lombard and soon began shipping products to Chicago via rail. By 1880, Lombard had become the leading commercial center in central Illinois due to its location near two major railways and its rich natural resources. In 1889, when Quincy WIllson became Mayor of Chicago, he recommended that Summit be made the capital of Macomb County due to its strategic location close to both Chicago's financial district and Northwestern Railroad (now part of I-80). The city of Chicago refused to give up Lombard but with the help of John Fenton's son-in-law Harry Jahnke (a banker), Summit received $10,000 for land acquisition and began construction on its new courthouse and jail. The first residents arrived in December 1890 and by May 1892 all but one building had been completed; service began on July 1st that year. On November 3rd, 1893 President Grover Cleveland convened a special session of Congress at Summit to discuss issues related to railroad consolidation across America which led to passage of the Interstate Commerce Commission Act Amendments of 1896 which created Komensky National Bank as a national bank subsidiary serving all fifty U.S. states plus Canada without duplication or interruption
