Summit is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 86,898 at the 2010 census. The Summit area has been inhabited by Native Americans for over two centuries. In 1837, the first white man to set foot in what is now Summit was Joshua Lunsford. In 1871, George Pullman founded Pullman Palace Railway Company and began shipping hay from his farm to Chicago; he also built a sawmill on the river north of town. On July 6, 1872, Pullman's train derailed while traveling through Summit; eight people were killed and seventy-six were injured. The Panic of 1893 devastated the city and its mills; however, within a few years many of these had reopened and the economy grew rapidly thanks to new businesses such as steel production and real estate development. For most of the twentieth century Summit was known for manufacturing beer cans and other small items for grocery stores and automobiles. However, recent advances in technology have led to new industries such as filmmaking and medical treatment as well as expansions into services like online retailing In 2000, Summit became an incorporated municipality with a mayor-council government under which it operates as a unitary government with two branches: a mayor who serves out four year terms (with no term limits) and 12 council members who serve one year each with no term limits. As of the 2010 census there are 86 jurisdictions in Cook County that are municipalities or cities that are part of Cook County but do not have township status or local election authority; these include all but one of downtown Chicago's wards (the ward located near Park Ridge Center). The name "Summit" originated from an Indian word meaning place where deer ran free when they went past Hunting Meadows reservation south of present-day Carbondale on their way to food caches farther upriver. When white men first came into this area there were several villages including Hunting Meadows which was noted for its largeness compared to any other village on the Missouri River because hunting grounds were scattered throughout most or all of what is now southwestern Illinois except for some areas eastward along Lake Michigan including Streator which formed part of Pennsylvania until 1795 when it became part of Indiana Territory during the Northwest Boundaries Treaty between British America and France (see French Canada). Indians living near Deer Run received goods brought downriver by traders arriving by canoe from Great Britain via points near Fort Wayne on Lake Michigan - goods such as cornmeal flour sugar soap etc., which they sold back upstream at great profits before sailing away again downriver loaded with whatever else they could carry

Summit is a small town in Sangamon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,866 at the 2010 census. Summit is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is located on the north side of Sangamon County and about 20 miles east of Chicago. The village was established in 1836 as a stop on the stagecoach route from Kankakee to Jacksonville Township on the present-day border of Cook and Kane counties. A post office operated there until 1872. In 1875, Summit became a community under the name of "Sangamon Heights". On July 5, 1886, it became an incorporated village with a population of 2,000 people under its jurisdiction; these were largely Methodists who had moved to Summit from other villages in Sangamon County after religious conversions in 1881 (the first Methodist church service in Illinois took place there). On November 8, 1910–the date that calendar year's tornado touched down near Springfield – Summit had its first election as an unincorporated community with a voting population of 719 residents through mail-in ballots cast by men only (no women then lived within 200 miles). That same day two local newspapers reported that "summit means business" because it would soon become one of Illinois' leading industrial towns and would be home to at least five large textile mills. In 1916 when General Motors broke ground for their new factory outside Chicago at Peoria Avenue and Wabash Street just south of downtown Summit proper (now Midtown Park), GM representatives traveled throughout Sangamon County to meet with unofficial leaders like pastor Hemanus Swartzwelder from nearby Waukegan and banker Elisha Whitney from Rockford – all men who could lay claims to leadership or influence over GM plants due to their close proximity to GM production sites or their relationship with company executives. In addition future governors Bob La Follette (D) and George Ryan (R) served as Glover's assistants during this time period while attending school at John Carroll University in Baltimore City where they were majoring in engineering/commerce/lawrenceburg before becoming state legislators back home in 1932 when La Follette succeeded Ryan as governor following his death that year Only one family member out of ten living within 100 miles serving on city council ever resided within 10 miles radius including myself so I am not sure if my recollection matches what you said about how many people lived within 500 mile radius back then
