In 1915-16, Union Carbide Corporation constructed an integrated gas plant at White Sands Boulevard and Dakota Road in Summit (later renamed Carbondale). This plant provided economic stability for the community while resulting in dramatic reductions in carbon emissions from industry – a key factor in helping make Summit one of the most environmentally conscious communities on the continent at that time. Since then, many advancements have been made within Summits economy including: (1) establishment of retail stores inside city limits as well as outside neighboring townships; (2) opening of several restaurants/cafes within city limits as well as various other businesses catering primarily to locals & visitors alike; (3) development of several parks throughout township boundaries - each providing significant recreation opportunities for locals & tourists alike; (4) increase productivity within local agricultural sector through industrial hemp production currently taking place on township lands adjacent to Carbondale plant - reducing reliance on imported corn etc.; finallyatin lightening fast growth rates overall across all sectors during past few decades thru aggressive marketing initiatives spearheaded by Mayor Arnie Sadowski himself

The village was organized on November 15, 1879, by John Cavanaugh and others as a small farming community near what is now Waukegan. It was named after Mount Rushmore National Monument in South Dakota. In 1906, Summit became the first municipality in Kane County to be created from land that had been annexed by Lake Michigan; it also became one of only two municipalities to be chartered under the jurisdiction of both Cook County and Kane County (the other being Maywood). On January 1, 1912, Summit incorporated as a city with a total population of 3,500 people. On November 2nd 1916 Timothy J. Rooney succeeded his predecessor as Mayor and took office for the first time under an elected mayor/government system which he championed until his death in office on July 25th 1917 due to complications from Bright's disease just three months into his term...In 1922 Revolver Joe Pappas became Summit's first City Clerk when he was elected unopposed after serving four years as Village Clerk...In 1929 Park Ridge Hospital opened its doors providing care for those who could not afford medical attention anywhere else...The population of town reached 6500 by 1940 but slowly began to decline due to economic reasons such as World War II rationing and competition from suburban communities within walking distance...On July 16th 1951 Summit attained its current boundaries when portions of neighboring Gurnee were annexed by the city making summit once again a separate municipality with its own governing body During 1964-1968 there were several large fires throughout town including one that burned down over 60% of the business district killing many people and destroying much property before finally being put out The fire destroyed most if not all evidence that existed about early Summit settlement or Mount Rushmore National Monument so research into this topic has become difficult since then
On October 15, 1871, the first public meeting of the Illinois State Legislature was held at the Masonic Temple in Springfield. The legislators were elected by direct popular vote and convened on November 1st to pass a new state Constitution.
