Summit is a town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,651 at the 2010 census. Summit is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Summit were farmers who arrived in 1825. The town was platted in 1829 and named for General James H. Summit, a brigadier general during the American Revolution and then a surveyor-general under President James K. Polk. A post office was established at Summit in 1830, and it remained open until 1907. In 1857, the Union Pacific Railroad reached Summit from Oglethorpe County; this made it possible to market goods directly to consumers rather than having them transported over land or shipped by riverboat. In 1865, when Illinois became a state, Summit became one of its original townships. The first store opened in Summit on November 5, 1865; it was run by Mrs. Wm Jorgan (1814-1902). By 1870, there were six stores operating in summit; four of these were operated by women (Mrs. Nettleton (1842-1927), Mrs. Mason (1848-1915), Mrs. Fenton (1851-1921)), while two were operated by men: Mr.(Samuel) Cramer(1824-1900) and John White(1796-1882). In 1880, coal began to be mined near the town site; production increased rapidly but fluctuated because of competition from other mines nearby In 1902 an electric power plant was built near present day Park Avenue and Walnut Street which supplied electricity for homes and businesses until 1935 when wiring became available throughout central Illinois . After World War I much of Junction City disbanded leaving many people out of work as mills closed their doors . In 1865 Amos Cadwallader set up his blacksmith shop here while also working as an agent for the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad. In 1916-17 Frank Matson ran a bakery here before moving to Peoria to open his own bakery there. A courthouse was constructed in Summit between 1830 and 1860 but it only held civil court hearings for a few years before being replaced by the present courthouse which opened on November 15, 1892. In 1924 two brothers founded what is now known as Wrigley Field Corporation which kept baseball alive during prohibition by marketingalcoholic drinks through its teams playing games at various parks across America (the Cubs were founded 1895).
