A store called "Gunsmith's Gulch" was established in 1892, and began selling shells for handguns and shotguns. In 1916, the National Rifle Association (NRA) formed in Chicago, Illinois, and started buying rounds for their rifles from local stores. The NRA started selling rounds online in 1949. In 1969, Summit Area High School opened its doors with the intention of providing instruction in gunasonry and shooting sports to students from surrounding schools. At that time, there were only three other high schools within a radius of 100 miles of Summit Area: Prospect Heights High School, Pella High School, and Armstrong Technical High School. With the opening of HSHS, ammunition sales increased significantly due to students being able to use guns more effectively in school settings. As HSHS expanded its curriculum to include firearm safety skills as well as different types of firearms, ammo sales also increased exponentially; allowing for more people access to safe storage and shotshell firing opportunities at school events/ Activities! In 1970, Summit became home to Illinois's first high school football team when Park Ridge High School moved to town from Oak Lawn. Since then, Summit has become one of the most developed cities in central Illinois with a variety of industry including two professional sports teams (NFL's Bears and NBA's Bulls), several high-technology companies including Nokia and Intel, four hospitals (Stritch Medical Center, Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Hospital/Good Samaritan Hospital-East Side Health System-South Side Health System), six elementary schools (Four Corners Elementary School; Mount Carmel Academy; Southwestern Heights Intermediate School; Vista Ridge Middle School; Crestwood Elementary School; North Park West High School), two parks (Oneonta Lake State Park - located west of town along Oneonta Creek - and Morton Grove National Wildlife Refuge - located east of town), three universities (Illinois State University - north side campus near downtown; Southern Illinois University Carbondale - south side campus near Carbondale); five major shopping malls ( Sears Holdings Corporation's Sears Trade Centers across from downtown on this site where he also owns Kmart ); numerous small businesses including convenience stores, gas stations, breweries/wine appellations etc.; more than 100 governmental buildings including twenty-six government libraries plus twelve non-governmental library systems In its heyday as an industrial center during the late 19th century through into the early 20th century following Prohibition in America there were over 200 mills producing everything from textiles to shoes to automobiles all around town generating enough jobs for 400 families according to local historian Edwin Suster who wrote about it: "Summit had been founded by George Washington’s aides as a stop onthe Underground Railroad for fugitives from slavery just before he left office in 1836...In 1860 it became an important center forthe Republican PartyduringtheAmericanCivilWar....After UnionforcesburneddownmostofSummitin1865,.Summitgrewrapidlyasaminingandagriculturalcenter." When Park Ridge High School moved to town from Oak Lawn in 1970 after years playing at Sherman Middle or Davidson Middle Schools both nearby schools finally graduating their respective populations they needed new housing so they built what would become known now as “The Hills” which still stands today off Wabash Avenue between McCormick Road & I Street providing much needed housing since most people living there until recently were either factory workers or farmers or their families worked at one or more factories that used land that once formed part of Summits original townsite. Once again many thanks go out to our wonderful Mayor Michael Hogan who fought tooth and nail for this project which will provide many homes not only for Rahm Emanuel’s political appointees but also low income residents that have called him directly asking how they can get involved because even if they don’t live within walking distance they can still help contribute financially making sure every person has access to quality affordable housing whether it be through deed restrictions or condemnations like we did with The Hills . Today Summit hosts over 500 businesses spread throughout nearly every sector employing over 10K people making it one of Central ILs largest economic engines while preserving much valuable parkland adjacent thereto while creating thousands new jobs across various industries within commuting distance
