In 1916 the company merged with Gossamer & Weaver of Boston to become the Gossamer & Weaver Optical Company Incorporated. In 1947 the optical division of G&W was spun off as Hirschfeld Observatory Corporation which continued manufacturing telescopes until its closure in 1978.
Streator, Illinois is a city in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 25,878 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kane County. The city's history dates back to 1839 when it was founded by wagon drivers and other travelers who were on their way to the nearby cities of Chicago and Quad Cities. In 1845, Streator became a town after being granted a charter from the state of Illinois. The first mayor was John Aiken. In 1865, Streator became a part of the new United States territory of Kansas when that state was split between Missouri and Texas. In 1870, Streator began to grow rapidly due to its location at the intersection of two major railroads: The Chicago and Milwaukee Railway (C&M) Line and The Western Union Telegraph Company Line (WU). By 1875, there were over 1,000 residents in the town. By 1900 there were over 5,000 residents living in Streator proper and 2,500 people living in its environs. By 1910 there were 10,000 residents living in all of Kane County with 6% growth rate throughout that decade alone! In 1916-1917 an effort was made to get approval for a large dam on the Rock River upriver from Streator which would have generated electricity for local use as well as creating jobs for locals; however this project failed because local citizens did not want any share in profits associated with it - another example highlighting how little interest local citizens had in accepting outside investment into their community during this time frame! During World War I (1914-18), many businesses closed due to rationing; however many others like meat packing plants refrained from closing because they could still sell enough food to make ends meet even though they stopped producing goods altogether! After World War I ended came job shortages following World War II which led some businesses such as car dealerships restarting operations but they quickly closed again due to increased competition from other stores across America! Finally by 1975 only 8% of businesses remained open statewide despite efforts by government officials trying hard to revive economic development within communities! However significant changes have occurred since then including 3 waves of mergers/acquisitions within businesses throughout Kane County culminating with current day company headquarters located inside what once functioned as one small building!!!!

The township of Streator was organized on November 8, 1836, from parts of Aurora and Ottawa Township. The first settler in what is now Streator was Alexander Wallace who arrived October 15, 1837. He built a log cabin on the banks of the Will River. In 1839 he married Nancy Greenough and they started a farm near present-day Streator and founded the village of Greenough which later became part of Rockford. In 1850 Nancea Broughton erected a large frame building in honor of her late husband William Broughton (1786-1859), Mayor of Rockford from 1840 to 1845 and an early investor in this community. When the first white settlers arrived in Streator, they were greeted by Native Americans. The first European settlement was made on the banks of the Des Plaines River, which is now known as West Side Highway. In 1814, a group of Illinoisans founded a farm named Griggs in what is now called Griggs Township. The town developed around this farm and began to grow when grain became available for sale in nearby villages. By 1830, Griggs had a population of about 100 people. In 1833, the town was renamed Streator after General James K. Polk who helped lead the United States into World War 1. The city annexed neighboring towns in 1957 and has grown steadily ever since. Today, Streator is one of the largest cities in Illinois with a population over 200,000 people and an economy that includes manufacturing, services and retail businesses.
