Streator is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 54,725 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County. The city was founded in 1847 by Captain John Streator and his family as Southeastern Illinois Village on the site of what is now the downtown core of Chicago. In 1872, Captain Streator donated land to form the present-day city limits, which extended south from Lake Michigan to Decatur Boulevard. The first settlers were German immigrants who named their town after their hometown of Stratholme in Scotland. In 1914, Streator became one of five cities in Illinois that joined together to form the Metropolitan area known today as Chicago–Gary–Bloomington (MCA). That same year saw another important milestone when President Woodrow Wilson signed an act creating Des Plaines Township within Cook County and giving it its own government with its own mayor and council. Streator is a small town located in the far northwest corner of Illinois, about twenty-five miles north of downtown Chicago. At the 2010 census, its population was 4,147. The first people to inhabit Streator were the Potawatomi Indians. The first white man to arrive in this area was Captain George Kincaid who landed on what is now the east side of town in 1795. He named his new settlement after his friend and business partner, Sir John Streator, an Englishman who had recently founded a post at Vandalia on the Mississippi River. In 1801, Captain Kincaid's brother-in-law William Fenton became the first white settler in what is now Streator Township when he bought land from the Potawatomi Indians. In 1837, David Gridley built a gristmill on the banks of Wabash River which later became known as Gridley Mill & Company. The mill provided food for local farmers and also powered one of several early locomotives used by farmers in this area. In 1845, John Aiken opened a tannery on what is now State Road 20 near where he lived until his death in 1915. That same year saw another early success story when Jno Haggerty started selling ice cream from a wagon parked at the edge of town square. By 1905, there were already over fifty businesses operating in Streator with more being added everyday throughout that decade. This prosperity continued into World War I when many residents turned their attention to helping produce goods for military use including munitions and clothing stores as well as bakeries and candy shops necessary for soldiers' morale during combat timeframes ranging from 1917 through 1919. After WWI ended however, most businesses closed down or changed hands as technology advanced making it difficult for any new businesses to start up again especially given that taxes had been raised significantly since then making it difficult for anyone without government assistance to do much more than survive economically speaking given how much money had once been invested back then into local economy by both individuals and government alike which oversight has only become increasingly harder to provide due to budget constraints these days even though economic growth rates have actually increased modestly since then overall despite some lingering economic challenges still present today such as low job security indexes nationally (see "Economic indicators" section below) . The decline and abandonment of agriculture shortly thereafter led to increasing social unrest along with numerous crime rates becoming increasingly rampant throughout those years beginning around 1930 although prostitution did continue unabated until 1984 according to one report although other reports claim that prostitutes gradually transitioned into general drug sales beginning around that time too either way commercial sex work slowly lost its stigma following decriminalization starting around 1990). According to one study done between 1991-1996 almost all male prostitutes working within three hundred feet of any grocery store or convenience store went out OF BUSINESS thereby illustrating just how entrenched prohibitionism/legalized prostitution has become within society overall ). A number of factors contributed leading upto Prohibition: 1) organized crime cartels control large areas providing patronage; 2) lacklustre demand led producers/ wholesalers reluctance rather than risk competitors entering; 3) rapidly declining value proposition due largely To technological advancements made available over preceding decades through trade unionism among brewers etc.; 4) political instability caused by competing demands made by different factions vying for power - primarily Republicans seeking stricter regulation while Democrats pushedFor lessening regulations fearing they would leadTo greater uncontrolled industry - primarily leading directly towards organized crime activity; 5) ineffective regulation Lead more dealers/producers underground becoming involved further exacerbating cartel power etc., 6) few enforcement efforts resulting in widespread corruption both state & federal level; 7) high demand resulting Coexisted With Illegal Activity yielding mixed results
In 1848, the town of Streator was organized and named in honor of General James K. Polk, who had led America into the Mexican-American War. The town’s first post office opened in 1851. In 1865, a railroad was built through Streator and it became an important center for agricultural production. In 1907, the first high school was established in Streator and the town developed a strong nightlife industry.
