Streator, Illinois is a small town located in the northwest corner of Illinois. The population was 5,569 at the 2000 census. Although it has only been around since 1847, Streator is considered to be one of the most significant towns in central Illinois. The first settlers in what is now Streator were fur traders who came from Canada in 1807. They built a trading post near present-day Streator and began to trade with the Native Americans and other people living in the area. In 1814, a group of German farmers moved into what is now Streator and started to grow corn and rye crops. At that time, there were no roads or railroads running through this part of Illinois so trade was done by boat or wagons overland. In 1846, there was an effort to build a railroad through this part of Illinois but it was not completed until 1870. This railroad allowed for easier access to markets in Iowa and Minnesota which made agriculture more profitable. After the railroad came along, a number of businesses sprang up in what is now Streator including a millinery shop, shoe store, post office and theatre. By 1900, Streator had become known as an important center for agricultural production and commerce throughout central Illinois. Today, many aspects of life in Streator are associated with its history including its name which comes from Ottawa County's first settler John Soret (1796-1868). Soret named his farm after Count Claus von der Groeben who had helped him purchase land east of Chicago in 1837. Today, there are several restaurants called Soret's Place which serves Czechoslovakian cuisine as well as American food like burgers and fries etc.. The community also has two museums: The John Aughton House Museum which tells the story of local farmer John Aughton who developed some early technologies such as cotton ginning and printing; while also displaying artifacts related to General Tomahawk's Raid on Topeka on November 14th 1865 which led to Missouri becoming an Indiana Territory

Streator, Illinois was founded in 1836 by James W. Streator and his brother John. The town became a post office in 1838, and soon had a population of around fifty people. In 1840, the Streators built the first school in the town and it served as the local government's main building until 1907. In 1851, they founded the first grain elevator in Illinois. By 1860, there were over one hundred residents living in Streator. The town developed a large industry based on agriculture and wool production until World War II when it lost its manufacturing base to nearby Chicago. Today, there is only one business standing in downtown Streator: The Grain Exchange which reopened in 2002 after being closed for many years. James W. Streator died in 1865 and John Wurtz took control of the town governments until he was fatally wounded during an attack on his home by two men on November 8th of that year. James' widow took over running the towns government until her death three years later on January 12th of 1870 leaving James' son John Jr., as sole owner of the towns government with responsibility for all aspects of municipal life including education, housing, public works (roads and bridges), police services, firefighting and other civic activities.(1) On July 1st of 1889 James Jr.'s wife Margaret died suddenly at their home after a long illness; however this did not change Johns role as Mayor or Governor nor did it affect how power passed from father to son.(2) On December 15th 1890 John Jnr married Emma Matson who would eventually become Mrs. George Hennepin; however upon George Hennepin's death four years later on October 5th 1895 Emma inherited all his property & titles including ownership of both mayorship & governorship which she continued to hold even after moving back to Minneapolis.) The first school opened up within walking distance of where we stand today called Grades 1-6 School District No 4 which operated from 1838-1860 before moving to their current location(3). In 1861 due to increased enrollment at schools nearby Grades 7-12 moved into new buildings on North Main Street(4). This building still stands today next door to what used to be our high school(5). Classes began here again Elementary grades through 8th grade starting February 1912 unfortunately due more then once now too much flooding has taken place along with bad weather making classes difficult either because there wasn't enough space or because kids just didn't show up! From about 1922 through 1954 when Grades 9-12 came into existence middle/junior high moved into various buildings east off First Street between Masonic Temple Park across from Goodyear Tire Company Building finally becoming our present day high school beginning September 1954! Unfortunately due mainly too bad weather we've been having quite often lately so classes have been cancelled quite alot but thankfully I'm working hard towards getting them reinstated as quickly possible! In addition currently you can walk outside your front door & see Our Lady Of Loretto Chapel right next door also dating back to around 1830 although no actual records exist verifying this since most churches were started up pretty quickly without any formal documentation etc... However according to some old inhabitants who've talkedto me they claim that Our Lady Of Loretto Chapel actually preceeded Grades 3-8 School District No 4 which incidentally is also located right next door nextTo us!!!!! Which means if you go inside history Repeats itself!!!! lol
