Streator, IL is a small town in the northwestern corner of Illinois. It is bordered by Decatur to the north, Peoria to the east, and Carbondale to the south. The population was 9,043 at the 2010 census. The name of Streator comes from an early French settler named Francois-Louis de la Sale who named it for his estate in nearby Albany. The first European settlers in what is now Streator were Frenchmen who arrived around 1795. They built a trading post on the Sangamon River near present day Streator and named their settlement after their patron saint, Saint François-Luzier. In 1805, Englishman John Richardson settled in what is now northwest suburban Cook County and named his new community Richardsonstown after himself. At this time, only a few hundred people lived in Illinois due to difficult living conditions and lack of available land. In 1818, James Kapp established Kapp's Prairie Post on the east side of the Sangamon River near present day Carbondale and renamed his community Kappville after himself. By 1830, all but 10 or so residents of Illinois had abandoned Illinois because of economic reasons following the American Civil War (1861-1865). However, growth resumed with new arrivals following World War II (1939-1945). Today, Streator has a population of over 10,000 people who live within its boundaries. Streator, Illinois is a small town located in McLean County, Illinois. The population was 1,752 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1853 by two brothers, George and David Streator. They named it after their father, John Streator Sr., who had moved from Canada to Illinois in 1837. The first store in town opened its doors on Main Street in 1854. George and David Streator were both farmers and their lives were very much focused on their land and their families. They built a large home near the edge of town, which still stands today. In addition to farming, they also operated a blacksmith shop and an bakery until 1865 when they closed down due to financial difficulties. The family continued to live in the home until 1951 when they sold it to J C Kappelmeyer Jr.. Kappelmeyer ran the business for many years before selling it to his son-in-law Clifford Laughlin who kept it running until 1976 when it went out of business again. In 1978, Laughlin donated the building (now called the Community Center) to the local history museum which has been used as a library since then! As one of America's smallest towns – with just over 1,000 residents as of 2000 – Streator has some interesting quirks that make it unique among its counterparts: There are no street names within city limits; all streets within ½ mile radius are named Main or Easton Streets rather than “strea”ntors’ initial name(s). This is likely done so that there would be less confusion about where people should go if they encountered someone from another municipality while driving through town center or searching for something specific online; furthermore, without street names there would be less opportunity for businesses/institutions nearby such as banks/mallards (assuming those have addresses!) to get more attention; finally (& importantly), everyone uses "the" instead of "their". So say goodbye to Mr./Mrs./Dr./Hi... hello... "The Three Bears" (aka "Mr." Bear," "Mrs." Bear," & "Hi bear") when meeting someone new!
The first settler in Streator, Illinois was James C. Shea who arrived from Ireland in 1836. He built the first house on what is now the corner of Main and Elm Streets. The town was named after him. The first store was opened by John Hickey in 1839. In 1840, a post office was established and the name changed to Streator because of the abundance of water available there. A sawmill and grist mill were also built in this time period. In 1857, the town became a city and became one of the six cities that formed Cook County, Illinois.
