Streator is a city in the west central region of Illinois, United States. The population was 24,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Streator is located on the north side of the Will County line, just east of the village of West Dundee and south of Rockford. The first known settlement in what is now Streator was a small prairie town called Antioch which was founded by French fur traders in 1779. In 1810, John Sacconagambe built a log cabin near present-day East First Street and Third Avenue to provide shelter for his family as they traveled through what is now Illinois from Michigan. He named his new town after him and it soon became one of the most important settlements in that region. In 1831, Isaac Davenport surveyed land extending from (now) East First Street to (now) North First Street in what is nowStreator Township and laid out a townsite on it with buildings designed by architect Philip Hardin. The first post office at Antioch was established on November 15th, 1831, under license from Indiana Territory Territorial Governor James Kneeland based on an application filed by Davenport. The name "Allentown" was used for this oldest post office until1838 when it changed to "Streator". On December 12th, 1836, General Andrew Jackson's forces attacked Fort Dearborn while campaigning against Native American tribes in western Illinois; during the attack more than 200 people were killed or wounded including many settlers in Streator township including John Sacconagambe who lost an arm due torapnel caused by artillery fire as he led his people into battle against superior numbers before being captured alive later that day. After Jackson's victory over Native Americans at Battle Of White River Bridge less than two weeks later, General Harrison ordered all Ulysses S Grant's army units operating within Indiana territory to withdraw their forces back across state lines; this order closed off much of northwestern Illinois so no Indian warfare could take place without early warning or conflict; this included all but one chain mail regiment under Grant's command which remained at Fort Dearborn waiting for orders).
