The first store opened in 1851 and the first school was built in 1855. In 1923, the city of Streator merged with neighboring village of Ford to form one municipality which held all land within its borders except for a small piece of land at center that became known as "The Strip". On January 1, 2009 (old-fashioned date change), Streator voters approved an ordinance changing its name from "Streator Township" to "Fulton Township". This name change took effect on January 1st of that year and has since been supported by the mayor and all but two members of the township board. 1) Abram Biddle who served as Mayor from 1951 until his death in 1990 2) Mrs Marie Burnett who served as Township Clerk from 1984 until her retirement on October 30th 2006

Additionally, two hospitals now serve residents within Streator: Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) Health Science Center which opened in 2003 and Northern Illinois University- Carbondale (NIUCC) Health Sciences Center whichopened in 2009. The community has also developed an extensive arts scene with several performing arts venues such as Symphony Hall and Opera House as well as local publications like "The paper" and "The Citizens Journal". In addition to its cultural attractions, Streator is home to many parks that offer nature trails, playgrounds and groceries/restaurants.
