Streator, Illinois is a city in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,521 at the 2010 census. The name means "streets of wine" in Italian. The city was founded by George Stephenson in 1824 as a small village on the west side of the Kankakee River. It became an incorporated town in 1868 and a city in 1903. Streator is one of eight cities that make up the Chicago metropolitan area. The economy of Streator is based primarily on retail trade and services such as health care and education. In 2000, Boeing moved its production headquarters from Seattle to Streator after 25 years in Redmond, Washington. George Stephenson founded the village of Waterloo on his farmstead near present-day Streator to provide transportation for settlers who were moving westward during the Indiana Territory's Gold Rush era (1825–29). When settlement began around milepost 4½ on October 15, 1824, George Stephenson named his new community Waterloo because he had tasted wine while driving across Kankakee River country from his home at Peoria Township to get wine grapes for his winery at Dundee Gap on July 8 that year according to local tradition (). In 1828 when a post office was established at Waterloo with three mailbags per day between Peoria and Dundee Gaps under direction of General James Wilkinson (), it seems likely that George Stephenson's original village might have been renamed after him or another namesake associated with early wagon transportation through what is now Kane County; but this did not happen until 1865 when part of Dundee Township finally became part of Streator Village despite strong objections from some residents led by Peter Kirchhoff (). A committee consisting of Mayor John Hickey (), Postmaster Jeremiah Sheppard (), Drury Smith ()and others recommended renaming the village after American Revolutionary War general Philip Schuyler () for whom Chenango County had been named two years earlier (); but since no other member could come up with a good solution within two months() ,the decision was made not to rename the village until either more people came forward with suggestions or something better occurred which never happened. However there may be some connection between these names - both George Stephenson and Schuyler were born into wealthy families who enjoyed wine trading trips throughout their lives (). map showing location

Streator, Illinois was founded on May 4, 1829 by John and Elizabeth Streator. The town was named after the geographic landmark of Streator, Michigan. At its peak in 1830 the town had a population of 300 people. By 1839 the population had decreased to 100 people and by 1850 it only consisted of 10 people. In 1861 the town was renamed after General George Washington during the American Civil War. The town experienced a significant growth in population following World War II as new homes were built and businesses opened up. However, by 2000 Streator's population had decreased to just 25 people due to numerous changes in the area such as suburban development and a decrease in manufacturing jobs.
Streator, Illinois was founded on February 24, 1836 by Daniel Webster and his wife Sarah. The town was named for General Streator, a hero of the Mexican-American War. The first settler in the town was George White. white opened a farm near the present day intersection of Black Street and Washington Avenue in 1838. In 1840, white built a two-story log cabin on the corner of Black and Washington streets. A store and post office were both established in 1840. The first school in Streator was built on the northeast corner of Washington Avenue and Black Street in 1841. A Baptist church was organized in 1845 and dedicated by President James K. Polk; it is still standing today at 415 N Main Street.
