They've become an important part of American culture and society. In Streator, Illinois, they're a popular pastime for residents and tourists alike.
Streator is a small town in the southern Illinois region. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Carbondale-Normal Metropolitan Statistical Area. The largest employer in Streator is the Carbondale-Normal School District which has over 1,500 employees. Other significant employers include two local hospitals, one of which specializes in pediatric care and another that provides mental health services; and a number of smaller businesses. The history of Streator can be traced back to 1837 when John Atherton donated land to make way for a school district. In 1896, the first church in town was built on what is now Main Street. In 1921, Carbondale was founded as the capital of Illinois and Streator became its second city. Railroad service arrived in 1925 and by 1930, there were three churches and seventeen businesses in town. By 1970, only four businesses remained and the school system had grown to encompass more than thirty-five students grades K-12th grade combined! Today, many residents continue to contribute their time and resources to help support their community through various organizations such as Alpha Phi Omega sorority chapter (the oldest women's college fraternity in Illinois), United Way Girl Scouts/Zookeeper Club Troop 3355 (started by Mrs. Norma Herrington), Rotary International Lodge #332 (founded 1922), United Way Ambassadors program (volunteers who visit low income areas to provide assistance) as well as numerous local foundation donations which have helped countless families throughout town over the years including Habitat for Humanity Chicago; American Cancer Society; American Heart Association; disabled veterans' organization Americans with Disabilities Act Services Inc.; Knights Of Columbus - Masonic Temple #5331; Parent Teacher Association - Park Elementary School District 413 & Mrs./Dr., Vicky Brown

Streator, Illinois is a small town located in central Illinois. The town was founded in 1811 by Fenton M. Cook, and it has remained an important community for centuries. Streator’s history begins with the arrival of Europeans in the area in the early 1800s. One of the earliest settlers in Streator was Fenton M. Cook, who arrived in 1811. Cook had come from Connecticut and he built a log cabin on the banks of the Fox River. Cook became an important figure in the community thanks to his leadership and his donation of land to make Streator its permanent home. In addition to its importance as a settlement, Streator also played an important role during the American Civil War. For several years, Streator served as headquarters for Confederate General John Custers army during the war effort. In 1865, however, after Union forces captured nearby Cairo*, Missouri*, Streaetor reverted back to Union control*.
