It is located on the east bank of the Missouri River, just upstream from St. Louis. Streator was founded in 1827 by James Fenton and others as a small community on the edge of what is now rural Streator Township. In 1837, it became an incorporated town and in 1852 it became a city. The Census Bureau reported that 992 people lived in Streator as of 2010.sted until after World War II when it began to decline due to suburbanization and industrial growth around it. However, recent economic resurgence has seen Streator's population increase again to 1,055 according to the 2016 census estimate

The first permanent settler in this area was David Watkins, who built a log cabin on the site in 1809. In 1814, John C. Frick and his brother-in-law, Daniel Drake, erected a frame house here. The two brothers were farmers until they sold their land to James K. Polk in 1832. Streator became an important manufacturing center during the early years of the 20th century due to its location at the mouth of the Chicago River and its access to various materials exported from abroad.
