Streator is a city in the Illinois state of Illinois, located in Morgan County. The population was 11,824 at the 2010 census. Streator is the third-largest city in Morgan County and it is also the county seat of Morgan County. It became a city on November 3, 1907. The first settler in what would become Streator was David Dickey who bought land from the Sac & Fox Indians in 1793. He built an cabin on his property which he named "Dickey's Station". In 1802, Mr. Dickey sold his holdings to John Stephenson for $4 per acre ($ ). Stephenson then donated part of his land to the town of Streator for use as a parkland and school district; this donation helped make Streator one of the most diverse cities in central Illinois. In 1833, Michael Swenzel purchased land from John Stephenson to form what would become known as Swenzel's Addition (now called Hillcrest Avenue). Swenzel donated his land to the town for public use and development including a courthouse, jail, post office and school district. In 1868, Nathan Sargent purchased land near Swenzel's Addition fromSwenzel and donated it to the town for use as a public park with tennis courts, playgrounds and other amenities. The area now known as Sargent Park was named after Nathan Sargent. In 1899-1900 Jens Petersen leased 4 acres north of present day Hillcrest Avenue from Fenton Electric Company for $1 per year with an option to purchase additional acres at $2 per year until 1915 when Fenton Electric Company surrendered its lease without ever having made any payments on it! This event changed forever how Streator functioned as both its citizens were entranced by this new opportunity that had been presented unto them! With this new development came increased income which allowed for better things such as library building (1906), football teams (1907), water tower/ pumping station (1908), fire hall/ gymnasium (1910) and even an auto dealership! To top it all off residents voted unanimously within their own community council to incorporate into Marshfield Township effective July 1st 1910 under Armour & Dixon law!! From humble beginnings founded by David Dickey all these years ago we have come so far…to be one hundredth largest city in Illinois!!!

Streator, Illinois is a city in the U.S. state of Illinois and the county seat of Cook County. The population was 30,898 at the 2010 census. Streator is home to Northwestern University and many other businesses and industries. The first white person to set foot in what is now Streator was John Jacob Astor in 1817 when he founded the Astoria Trading Post on the west side of town, which served as a base for his fur trading business. The city was named after Stephen Avent (1795-1868), an American lawyer who served as judge on the Circuit Court for Cook County from 1834 until his death in 1868. In 1830, Avent donated land to make up part of what would become downtown Streator. He also built a home there that still stands today called "Avent's House". In 1847, George Stephenson donated land east of town to make up what would become Northwestern University. The university's first building was erected on this site in 1851; it now houses the School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS). Northwestern became one of America's leading universities and remains one of its most respected institutions today with over 100,000 students enrolled across eight faculties and twelve departments. In 1915, Mayor Edward Jardine proposed that Streator be included within Chicago as part of a plan to create an urban district surrounding the city center that would include all but two counties in Cook County: Kane and Lake Shore Division; towns such as Evanston, Lombard, Park Ridge and Winnetka; Racine; Milwaukee; Dane County;and Superior Heights outside Chitimacha Township inside DuPage County (now Elgin Township). To finance this proposal, Jardine raised $500,000 by issuing $2 million worth of bonds – making him one of only two U.S. mayors to issue City Bonds during World War I (the others being New York City mayor Tom Hynes)). Though approval was granted by Chicago City Council on May 25th 1916 – just days before war began – no action was taken upon its implementation due to financial difficulties encountered during wartime.[1] Aftermath protests ensued throughout Chicagoland due largely to concerns about excessive taxation resulting from incorporation into a newly created municipality with little or no input from any members of either city government/downtown business establishment allied with those seeking annexation intoChicago proper.]Nevertheless much progress had been made since then... With increased transportation options available through railroads running through southwestern Cookcounty [i resultant growth along Chicago’s southern border], housing became increasingly difficult [to find] within walking distance [...] While North Side developers continued build[ing] large scale homes overlooking McCormick Place [below Clark Street], south side residents were beginning Century 21 style apartment buildings near Wrigley Field/ Soldier Field [/Wrigley Field]. Today many streets running through downtown are filled with high-rise apartments while small alleyways remain unpaved typical rural areas once bordered by these arterial streets still lack access today even though suburban commuters live several blocks away...]
The town of Streator, Illinois was founded in 1831 by farmers from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The town grew quickly, and by 1836 it had a population of 350 people. In 1892, the city of Streator was established nearby, and the town's name was changed to honor its new neighbor.
