Streator, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 12,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Streator is one of two towns in Cook County that are not wards of the City of Chicago; the other town is Park Ridge. The first settlers in what became Streator were fur traders who came from Canada in 1805 and established a trading post on the east side of the Kankakee River. In 1819, David Peabody founded Peabody & Co., an American Fur Company business which operated until 1870. In 1834, Nicholas Long opened a store and restaurant called The Gilded Cage near today's First Baptist Church. In 1855, John Ralston moved to Streator from Rockford and started J&R Ralston Woolen Mill on Main Street. This was also the beginning of what would become known as "Ralston's Mills." By 1872, there were 11 businesses in downtown Streator with over 100 employees working at Ralston's mills and warehouses alone. A new water works was built by Andrew Johnson & Sons ( later Phelps Dodge) in 1907-09 to provide power for all eleven mills and improve water sanitation. That same year saw construction begin on three churches – First Presbyterian (1893), Second Presbyterian (1901), and Third Presbyterian (1910). The first church services were held at First Presbyterian on December 3rd before moving to Second Presbyterian for services on January 2nd following a storm damage event there had occurred earlier that year during winter storms ravaging much of central Illinois! After years of hard work by many people - small companies included - downtown Streator became world-renowned for its now high quality fabric goods available only here! There are still some original buildings left standing from those pioneer days such as: The Gilded Cage building where John Ralston stored his woolens; Business Row with its four stores including Piggly Wiggly; Asphalt Plant #4 where asphalt was made for street paving; Old Post Office Building #1 which served as Jail until it was destroyed by fire in 1951; and finally School House Lane which once housed Our Lady Of Good Counsel Catholic school until it closed down due to declining enrollment around 1960s when transportation improved so much that parochial schools could provide better education options closer to homes! Today Downtown Streator has become home to many interesting shops and restaurants providing great local food choices while preserving some beautiful old buildings along School House Lane!

Streator, Ill., is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 10,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first permanent European occupants of what is now Streator were French traders and fur-traders who came to the area in 1795. The first settler in what is now Streator was Isaac Dunlap, who purchased 640 acres (248 ha) of land from the federal government in 1803. In 1816, John Pope bought 972 acres (387 ha) from Dunlap and foundedPope’s Mills on the site of what is now Pope’s Creek Road. In 1827, George Stephenson built a railroad through Streator and began distributing flour to Chicagoans. The town became a city on December 3,1830; it was one of three cities merged into Chicago by Mayor James Shields that year as part of then-City Plan No. 1. In 1865, Abraham Lincoln made his famous speech "To All Americans" here while campaigning for re-election as President; he later campaigned here again on April 14th 1865 when he delivered his “ Riverside Speech” which criticized Ulysses S Grant's Department of War for its ineptitude in putting down the American Civil War efforts On November 15th 1922 an article about progressivism appeared in "The New York Times". This paper had been bought by Hearst Corporation that year and quickly became known for its progressive journalism However this era also saw some heavy handed management changes at Hearst Corporation including firebrand editor Harrison Gray Otis who desired to turn "the New York Times" into an elitist publication similar to London's "Daily Mail", which led to many protests from readers throughout late 1922 until early 1923 On October 2nd 1923 Hearst Corporation announced they would be selling their controlling interest in "The New York Times" with plans to merge all their publications into one large company under new name Hearst Communications
Streator, Illinois was founded by Captain John S. Streator on October 9, 1836. The town was named for him and his wife Ann. The first courthouse in the town was built in 1840.
