The primary industry in Streator is agriculture; however, some businesses also exist such as a grocery store and a Barber Shop- both having been open for over 40 years now! The community also boasts several parks which include a playground and baseball diamond as well as tennis courts and basketball court!

The earliest mention of Streator comes from records dating back to 1790. At that time, the town was known as Johnson County seat and was part of the Indiana Territory. In 1809, however, Streator became an independent municipality under the name of Athens Township. During this time, it played an important role inthe development of central Illinois society. In 1818-19, Streator experienced another significant growth period thanks to advances in transportation technology. This new method of transporting goods made it possible for businesses and residents to prosper outside of Indianapolis. As a result, business owners began moving their operations into the city proper and by 1830, nearly all aspects of local life had been transformed within the limits of what is now downtown Streator. During this time frame also saw something very unique occur in central Illinois: The first statewide referendum on school funding occurred in this locality! This event helped spur heavy investment both in schools and infrastructure across the state – including muchneeded expansions at nearby Carbondale and Terre Haute – which continue to benefit today from continued economic growth in central Illinois. In 1847-48*, Gabriel Morley moved his family from Athens Township into what is now downtown Streator following his purchase of land northward along State Street from Ebenezer Brown* (later governor). Morley’sPurchase marked one STEP forward forStreator – becoming one OF THE FIRST CITIES IN CENTRAL ILLINOIS TO RECEIVE A PUBLIC SCHOOLSIDE ARRANGEMENT FROM THE STATE GOVERNOR.* *Gabriel Morley died prior to this date so no records exist documenting his donation
